Yoruba Literature and Language

B. Introduction

The programme is designed to and expand graduate students‘ general appreciation of the significance of Yoruba language in the life of its speakers in Nigeria, Africa and the Diaspora through teaching and research in higher educational and research institutions.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is hinged on the need for integrating students‘ oral and written competence and performance with their analytical skills in the language enterprise.

D. Aim and Objectives

The programme aims to promote the study of Yoruba Language and the documentation of Yoruba culture. The objectives are to:

  1. develop highly competent, versatile and effective users of Yoruba language;
  2. further equip students with research and analytical skills to enable them pursue higher study in Yoruba;
  3. enable students to be well informed and be conscious and aware of the linguistic diversity and the richness of Nigerian languages and other languages in the African continent; and
  4. enable students to appreciate various Yoruba literary genres and be aware of the richness of Yoruba and African culture.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. Candidates must possess a good Master degree in Yoruba from a recognized university, with a CGPA not below 4.0 on a five-point scale.
  2. Candidates who did not make up to a CGPA of 4.0 and were admitted into Ph.D. programme but later have their admission converted into Ph.D. after fulfilling the requirements will be allowed to complete the programme.
  3. Students who are found to be eligible for admission into Ph.D. programme but are in need of additional information in an area of specialization that may be useful for their theses will be required to audit some M.A. courses as prerequisite. These courses will be determined by the Departmental Postgraduate Committee.

F. Duration of The Programme

  1. The Full-time Ph.D. programme would run for a minimum 36 months, and a maximum of 48 months.
  2. The Part-time Ph.D. programme would run for 48 months and a maximum of 60 months.

G. Detailed Course Description

LIY 901 Ph.D. Protocol 6 Credits

A protocol on a topic in Yoruba Language shall be prepared by Ph.D. candidates. It includes normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to literature review, budget, implementation plan and other aspects required in Postgraduate School guidelines. The protocol shall be examined by the Department and recommended to Postgraduate School for approval through Faculty Board of Postgraduate Studies. 270h (P); C

LIY 997 Ph.D. Thesis 21 Credits

An original thesis written on the area of specialization. The topic which shall be approved by the Postgraduate School on the recommendation of the Department through the Faculty must make original contribution in the area of specialization. The thesis will be supervised by a member of staff whose qualification is not below the Ph.D., and who is not lower than Senior Lecturer in rank. 945h (P); C

G. Detailed Course Description

LIY 901    Advanced Syntax 3 Credits

An in-depth study of the theory of syntax most current in linguistics, with individual syntactic analysis of African language data (data on various syntactic process; nominalization, serialization of verbs, relativisation, etc.) within this theory. Argumentation and evaluation of solutions or analyses within the theoretical framework. (The course aims at ensuring that the student has a working knowledge of one theory of syntax). 45 (T); C

LIY 902    Advanced Phonology 3 Credits

A detailed study of the theory of phonology most current in linguistics, and individual analysis of language data within this framework, problems of argumentation and evaluation of analyses and solutions within this framework. (The course aims at ensuring that the student has a working knowledge of one theory of phonology). 45 (T); C

LIY 903 Phonology of Yorùbá 3 Credits

An in-depth study of the major phonological processes in Yoruba: vowel harmony, assimilation and contraction, syllabic nasals, loan-words, tone phenomena, reduplication (full or partial), etc. Argumentation and evaluation of analyses within a theoretical framework. 45 (T); E

LIY 904    Topics in Advanced Yoruba Morphology 3 Credits

A detailed study of the morphological structure of the Yoruba language and its dialects with special reference to new trends in morphological study. Morphophonology, morphosyntax, morphosemantics, lexemes, etc. will be examined in the context of the Yoruba language. Different morphological theories will be explored. Students will be expected to have a working knowledge of some of the theories. 45 (T); C

LIY 905 Yorùbá Language Field Methods 3 Credits Techniques of data elicitation and linguistic analysis of phonology, morphology, syntax of standard Yoruba or a dialect concluding with individual projects reflecting a knowledge of methods involved in data collection and analysis. Software tools for experimentation and linguistic analysis will be explored. (Students will need a laptop for this course.) 45 (T); C

LIY 906 Yoruba Dialects 3 Credits

A detailed consideration of the phonological, syntactic and lexical characteristics of the major regional and social dialects of the Yoruba language. 45h (T); E

To be eligible for the award of the Ph.D. degree in Yorùbá language, a student must have taken the core courses and an elective course and passed 27 Credits.
