B. Introduction

The Ph.D. Veterinary Public Health programme is for candidates who want to take up academic and/or research activities in Veterinary Public Health or Preventive Medicine. It is a purely research-oriented programme at the end of which candidates become experts in their chosen field.

C. Philosophy

The Ph.D. Veterinary Public Health programme is meant to impart advanced-level specialised training to candidates for a future career in teaching and research at the tertiary level as well as in both private and public sectors.

D. Aim and Objectives

The Ph.D. Veterinary Public Health programme is aimed at upgrading the research skills of professionals in the area of Veterinary Public Health. The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. Provide highly skilled training to candidates in the field of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine for the advancement of the field; and
  2. Train candidates to carry out independent research, proffer solution and policies that are important to solving public health problems such as zoonotic and communicable diseases.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. O‘ level credits in five subjects including Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and English Language;
  2. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or its equivalent from recognised institutions; and
  3. M.Sc. Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine or its equivalent from accredited institutions across the globe with a minimum weighted average score of 60% or CGPA of 4.0 for a scale
    1. of 5.0.

F. Duration of Programme

  1. Full-time programme shall span a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
  2. Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 72 calendar months.

G. Detailed Course Description

VPH 901 Seminar I 2 Credit

Proposal presentation seminar, candidates are to submit copies of each write-up before the seminar presentation. 90h (P); C

VPH 902 Seminar II 2 Credit

Research progress seminar, candidates are to submit copies of each write-up before the seminar presentation. 90h (P); C

VPH 903 Seminar III 2 Credit

Research findings seminar, candidates are to submit copies of each write-up before the seminar presentation. 90h (P); C

VPH 999 Thesis 24 Credits

Original and independent research project in any area of Veterinary Public Health under the supervision of an approved Supervisor(s). 180h (P); C

  • Graduation Requirements

The Ph.D. Veterinary Public Health degree shall be awarded based on writing and externally defending a thesis embodying significant contributions to knowledge. However, students that studied for their Masters elsewhere and are found to be deficient in some courses required for their research work and general knowledge, would have courses prescribed for him/her from M.Sc. Veterinary Public Health programme by the supervisory team. They would have to attend and pass these courses at a minimum of 50% to make up for their deficiencies.

To be awarded Doctor of Philosophy degree in Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, a candidate must have fulfilled the following conditions:
