B. Introduction
The Ph.D. Veterinary Pathology is intended to train Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) graduates who hold a M.Sc. Veterinary Pathology degree in advanced Veterinary Pathology research and to carry out diagnostic and investigative research in three research tracks of Diagnostic, Avian and Clinical Pathology for the award of the Ph.D. degree in Veterinary Pathology. The programme will equip students for employment in academia, biomedical research and biopharmaceutical industry.

VPA 911 Advanced Correlative Pathology 3 Credits
Independent necropsy examination. Histopathological case analysis. Clinicopathological case analysis and presentation; Seminars and/ or discussion. Analysis of post-mortem cases; from the departmental and the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) necropsy unit caseloads. Post-mortem rotation; Department and the VTH. Post-mortem cases submission; 25 cases assessment: species groups shall include; Small animals, large domestic animals, laboratory animals, non-human primates and other animals used for biomedical research and drug safety assessment. VPA 912 Advanced Diagnostic Methods in Pathology 3 Credits
Analysis of scientific studies. Basic molecular pathology. Pathology data description. Analysis and interpretation of pathology data. Use of basic principles and applied techniques in veterinary pathology; DNA PCR, Southern Blotting; RNA quantitative RT-PCR, Northern Blotting; Proteins Western Blotting; Tissue microarrays; Immunohistochemistry; immunofluorescence; ELISA; epigenetic alterations: DNA methylation, modifications of histones. Genetic modifications: transfection of cells, overexpression of genes, RNA interference, inducible expression, targeting of genes in mice and reporter assays: luciferase assays. VPA 913 Seminar I 1 Credit
Students shall be required to present an oral proposal seminar in the faculty within six (6) months of registration. This will be graded by a panel of academic staff to be appointed by the Postgraduate Coordinator. 45h (P); C
VPA 914 Seminar II 1 Credit
Each student is required to present the first oral seminar detailing the progress of his/her research work to the faculty. This will be graded by a panel of academic staff to be constituted by the Faculty Postgraduate Coordinator. 45h (P); C
VPA 915 Seminar III 1 Credit
Each student is required to present the second oral seminar detailing the result of his/her research work to the faculty. This will be graded by a panel of academic staff to be constituted by the Faculty Postgraduate Coordinator. 45h (P); C
VPA 999 Thesis 24 Credits
Each student would carry out a high calibre original investigation addressing contemporary issues in veterinary pathology under the supervision of an approved Supervisor or supervisory committee and defend the investigation before a Panel of Examiners, including an External Examiner in a thesis form. 1080h (P); C
