B. Introduction

The M.Phil.inVeterinary Parasitology programme is almost exclusively research-based, although students during the period of study will attend a number of specialised courses on current research topics mounted by the Department. A Ph.D. research will lead to an assessed outcome of a dissertation.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to provide specialised skills/training in particular areas of parasitology to produce skilled researchers, supervisors, lecturers for tertiary institutions and consultants.

D. Aim and Objectives

The programme is aimed at producing Ph.D. holders that can compete globally. The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. Equipped students with research skills through the conduct of supervised research, seminar presentation and thesis presentation
  2. Provide training for future careers in teaching and research at the tertiary level and in research and development in the public and private sectors; and
  3. Provide specialised training and impact advanced scientific knowledge in various areas of parasitology to meet the professional and expert labour needs of higher institutions and the society in various areas.

E. Admission Requirements

Candidates seeking admission into the programme must have the following qualification from recognised institutions:

  1. Five ‗O‘ level Credits in five subjects including English language, Biology/Agric Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.
  2. DVM or related discipline with a minimum of 2nd class lower division in addition to satisfying University Matriculation requirements.
  3. Academic Master Degree in Veterinary Parasitology with a minimum of 60% or CGPA of 4.0 for a scale of 5.0.

F.  Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time Doctoral programme shall be for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 72 calendar months.

VPE 910 Advanced Veterinary Protozoology and Entomology 1 Credit

Advanced studies on Protozoans, Insects, and Arachnids. 15h (T); 45h (P); C

VPE 912 Advanced Veterinary Helminthology 1 Credit

Advanced studies on helminths (Nematoda, Platyhelminthes, Acanthocephala, and Annelida). 15h (T); 45h (P); C

VPE 921 Seminar I 1 Credit

This involves a seminar presentation on the research proposal to the post-graduate committee of the Faculty. The presentation is assessed by a panel. 90h (P);C

VPE 922 Seminar II 1 Credit

The student presents the progress report on the approved research to the postgraduate board of the Faculty. The presentation is evaluated by a panel. 90h (P);C

VPE 923 Seminar III 1 Credit

The final seminar of the research findings is presented and evaluated by a panel. 90h(P);C

VPE 999 Thesis 24 Credits

Original investigation into an approved topic in Veterinary Parasitology under the supervision of approved supervisors. 1080h (P); C

  • Graduation Requirements

The candidates shall be required to have taken and passed all core courses with a minimum score of 60%. A minimum of 27 credit units including a research thesis must be passed. However, candidates found deficient in some courses required for their research work and general knowledge will have courses prescribed for him/her for M.Sc. Veterinary Parasitologyprogramme by the supervisory team. A candidate must pass a minimum of 30 credit units made up of the following to be awarded, the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Veterinary Parasitology:
