B.     Introduction

The Ph.D. Tropical Paediatrics is designed for high level professionals who are in charge of managing children and adolescents and also involved in research. It aims to strengthen the capacity of the specialist to be able to investigate and make in-depth academic contributions to tackle child health issues. The course will provide a pool of highly skilled professionals with sound academic capabilities to lead in clinical research and offer innovative approaches to child care and learning in the University and Research Institutes.

C.     Philosophy

The philosophy of the Ph.D. Tropical Paediatrics is the production of well trained high level academic personnel skilled in clinical teaching and research. The program is to be child focused and to promote innovation in the care of children and academic exploits.

D.     Aim and Objectives

The Ph.D. programmes in Tropical Paediatrics of the department shall provide further specialized training to enable candidates make original contribution to paediatric in general, and to provide academic and professional experts in the area of Child and Adolescent Health producing highly skilled academic professionals who care for children. The objectives are to:

  1. strengthen the clinical research capacity of highly skilled professional caring for children
  2. promote innovation and heightened academic standards in the care of children.

E.     Admission Requirements

Candidates for admission to the degree of Ph.D. must

  1. have obtained the primary Degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of this University or any institution recognized by Senate and a recognized Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College at Fellowship Level or its equivalent from West African College of Physicians in Pediatrics or other equivalent from foreign countries or have Master degree in Tropical Pediatrics of this University or other institutions recognized by Senate Candidates who have obtained a minimum of 60% level of pass, weighted average or CGPA of 4.0 out of 7 in the course examination for the M.Sc. degree programmed of courses from relevant fields to Pediatrics and Child Health from the University of Ilorin.
  2. Candidates admitted to the programmed will be required to take relevant taught courses in the first year of their registration. The degree shall be awarded on the basis of a thesis embodying original contribution to knowledge and satisfactory performance in any courses taken.

F.     Duration of the Programmed

  1. The full time programmed for the Ph.D. degree in Tropical Pediatrics shall last for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
  2. The part-time Ph.D. programme shall run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a              maximum of 72 calendar months.

  • Graduation Requirements

To obtain a Ph.D. in Tropical Paediatrics a candidate must have a minimum of 30 credits comprising 12 credits of thesis, 6 credits of seminar and 12 credits of un-audited courses. A Ph.D. candidate must have fulfilled these conditions in addition to the requirements of the Postgraduate School of University of Ilorin.
