B. Introduction
A warm welcome from the Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin to our Ph.D. students. Ph.D. Sociology of the Department has been carefully designed and structured to enable the students stand out as excellent scholars and practitioners capable of shaping a betterand safer world.
C. Philosophy
The general philosophyofthe Programme is the development of the total being through an enhanced capacity to direct the trajectory of development in a complex and industrializing society within the framework of a fast changing global environment. The philosophy also embodies the development of the mind through theoretical and empirical knowledge to encourage individual self-reliance.
D. Aim and Objectives:
i. To deliver grounded research-led degree awarding Ph.D. to deserving students in a conducive atmosphere that enhances learning and stimulates independent thinking.
ii. Train Ph.D. candidates that can compete favorably with counterparts within and out side Nigeria.
iii. Produce future trainers in the field of Sociology.
E. Admission Requirements
Matriculation requirement which must be 5 O’level credits including English language. Possess Masters Degree in Sociology with a CGPA of at least4.0 on a 5.0 point scale or 60% Demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making and problem solving potentials. Show a genuine intention and seriousness to pursued Ph.D. programme. Produce a concept paper not less than 5pages in the applicant‘s area of specialization.
F. Duration of Programme
Full-time: A minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 48 calendar months.
Part-Time: A minimum of eight 48 calendar months and a maximum of 72 calendar months.

SOC 901 Fundamental Elements of Sociological Theory 3 Credits
Distinction between classical and contemporary sociological theories; ideology, history and classical sociological theories, including nature and types of sociological theory (theory and social life, positivism, interpretive tradition and theory, criticaltheory). Acritical examination of classical sociological statements and theories with particular reference to the works of Auguste Marie Francois-Xavier Comte, Emile Durkheim, Herbert Spencer, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Georg Simmel, Sigmund Freud, Vilfredo Pareto, Thorstein Bunde Veblenand George Herbet Mead. SOC 902 Fundamental Issues in Statistical Methods in Sociology 3 Credits
Statistics as an important tool in sociological research. Detailed discussion of statistical tests and their relation to empirical research in behavioural sciences; descriptive statistics; Percentages, Proportions, and Ratios; Frequency Distributions; Tables; inferential statistics; measures of central tendencies and dispersion; the mean, media and the mode. Probability and Sampling; Hypothesis testing (one sample; two samples); Chi-square, T-test Multivariate analysis, the applications of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Covariance, Pearson Product co-efficient correlation, Regression analysis etc. 45h(T);C
SOC 903 Fundamental Elements of Sociological Research Methods 3 Credits
Advanced topics in social research methods, designs and methodology are examined;experimental, survey, ethnography, casestudies etc. Distinction between quantitative and qualitative research; quantitative methods (questionnaire and interview)and qualitative methods suchas focus group discussions (FGD),in-depth interview (IDI),semi-structured interviews (SSI) and observation.
