B. Introduction

The Ph.D. programme in Small Animal Surgery is designed for professionals that excel in the Master of Science, Small Animal Surgery and are interested in detailed and intricate management of small animal patients. The programme involves a lot of hands-on research and clinical management of difficult small animal surgical cases.

C. The Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to allow professionals who excel at the master’s programme and want to become specialists in various aspects of surgical management of small animal cases.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to train students to excel in the surgical management of intricate small animal cases. The objectives are to:

  1. expose the candidates to the art and use of state of art instruments for the management of cases using minimally invasive techniques;
  2. produce competent professionals capable of training students at tertiary institutions, and
  3. train the individuals in designing and carrying out research projects in small animal surgery.

E. Admissions Requirements

Professionals seeking admission into the programme shall have the following

  1. Matriculation requirements of the University of Ilorin including Mathematics and English language at credits level
  2. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or its equivalent from accredited universities
  3. Holders of M.Sc. in Small Animal Surgery or its equivalent from accredited universities across the globe with a weighted average score of 60% or 4.0 for a scale of 5.0.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
  2. Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 months and a maximum of 72 calendar months.

G. Detailed Course Description

VSR 925 Seminar I 1 Credit

Seminar is presented on a proposed topic of the research. The supervisory committee will evaluate and grade the presentation. 45h (P); C

VSR 926 Seminar II 1 Credit

The student presents a progress report on the research project. The report is evaluated and graded by the supervisory committee. 45h (P); C

VSR 927 Seminar III 1 Credit

A pre-defence presentation on the research findings is made to the Faculty postgraduate committee. The presentation is evaluated and scored. 45h (P); C

VSR 999 Thesis 24 Credits

A research thesis in the approved area of study, under the supervision of the committee, chaired by the major supervisor. The work is original and its contribution to small animal surgery is emphasised. 1080  (P); C
