B. Introduction

Global health challenges have made exercise lifestyle an imperative solution to prevention, maintenance and promotion of Health and Fitness. Experts in administration of Physical education and sports coaching, Exercise and Sports Science are needed to diagnose physical and physiological problems in relation to musculo-skeletal disorders, cardio-respiratory and metabolic challenges by administering, physical activities, exercise and sports. Also, Ph.D. graduates plan and implement programmes that will motivate the Nigerian populace in recreational pursuit. Demonstration of problem-solving capacity through critical innovation and creative thinking in the diverse field of Human Kinetics is very essential especially with the upsurge of threats to humans‘ physical, mental, social and physiological health as a result of sedentary lifestyle environmental threats.

C.  Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to develop a Recreation and Tourism Professional/ Experts who will advance researches and practices that impact on sports performance, Recreation and Tourism, human health and wellness across lifespan regardless of physical, physiological, psychological or biomechanical disabilities.

D.   Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to produce Recreation and Tourism Experts who are knowledgeable in aid committed to implementation of National Policy on Education and Nigeria Nature Tourism Plan towards achieving world vision of Optimal Health, Recreation, Wellness and Fitness for all and promotion of economic powers.

Objectives:

  1. adequately equipping Ph.D. graduates of Recreation and Tourism with relevant knowledge, research, competence, professional skills and attitudes to effectively function and practice as high level man power in diverse areas of Recreation and Tourism Education;
  2.    developing competent, committed and knowledgeable Recreation and Tourism experts/educators/researchers who will provide and intellectual competence in the field that is relevant to global context;
  3. having the ability to harmonize knowledge and handle issues, and formulate judgments with incomplete or limited information that can solve problem on social, emotional and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgment; and
  4.   imparting skills and communicate conclusions, knowledge and rational of the profession to specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously.

E.  Admission Requirements

Candidates for the Ph.D. degree in Recreation and Tourism Education must have one of the following:

  1. ‗O‘ Level Credits or equivalent in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. All candidates must have a Master degree in any relevant area of specialisation in Recreation and Tourism Education with a minimum CGPA of 4.0 or 60%.
  3. Holders of M.Phil. degree in the area of specialisation.
  4. In all cases, candidates may be expected to undergo a selection process involving qualifying examination and/or interviews.

F.  Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 72 calendar months.
  3. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the university shall be required

  • Graduation Requirements

To qualify for the award of Ph.D. programmes in Human Kinetics (Recreation and Tourism Education), a candidate must have fulfilled the following conditions:

  • Pass a minimum of 40 Credits including all courses as follows:

3 Core courses of 3 Credits each   9 Credits

A minimum of 4 courses of 3 Credits each in the area of specialisation                                 21 Credits

A candidate is entitled to a waiver of 12 Credits from the Master degree courses, provided those courses are judged to be identical and at the same depth to those offered by the given university, as may be decided by the Postgraduate Committee.

To proceed to Ph.D. candidacy, a candidate must pass a comprehensive upgrading examination at a minimum score of CGPA of 4.0 or 60%.

A candidate who after two attempts fails a comprehensive examination shall be asked to withdrawn.
