B. Introduction
The programme is designed for candidates who have successfully completed an M.A. and M.Phil./Ph.D. programme in the Performing Arts or related disciplines. The Ph.D. programme has 2 semesters of classroom work and the rest, fieldwork. The candidate is expected to do research on any chosen topic in any of these five areas: Drama, Dance, Music, Media Arts and Technical Theatre and to submit a thesis at the end of the programme.
C. Philosophy
The philosophy of the programme is to premise on developing advanced rational and critical thinking on the various facets of aesthetics of the performing arts. It is hoped that the Ph.D. students will be able to evolve a philosophical thought in their area of specialisation that can be developed into a thesis for the general development of the performing arts internationally.

The aim of the programme is to produce high quality graduates to fill high level faculty positions in tertiary/research institutions and to produce graduates who have a deep knowledge of the subject matter in their chosen areas of specialization

PFA 902 Ph.D. Protocol 6 Credits
Protocol on a topic in any specialised areas of the performing arts: dance, drama, media arts, music or technical theatre shall be prepared by Ph.D. candidates. Normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to literature review: budget, implementation plan and other aspects required in postgraduate school guidelines, the protocol shall be examined by the department and recommended to the postgraduate school for approval through faculty board of postgraduate studies. 270h (P); C
PFA 998 Thesis 21 Credits
Original thesis written on the candidate‘s area of specialization. Topic which shall be approved by the postgraduate school on the recommendation of the department through the faculty must make original contribution in the area of specialisation to knowledge. Thesis will be supervised by a member of staff whose qualification is not below the Ph.D. and who is not lower than senior lecturer in rank. 945h (P); C
H. Graduation Requirements
To be eligible for the award of a Ph.D. degree in the Performing Arts, a student must read and summarise five Ph.D. Theses before he/she presents a well-articulated protocol. Thereafter, he/she presents two seminar papers in his/her area of research on a chosen and viable research topic. It is after successfully satisfying these conditions that the student can proceed to write a Thesis. When completed, the candidates shall face a panel of Examiners to defend the research work. A Ph.D. in the Performing Arts has these areas of emphasis: Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Technical Theatre depending on the research interest of the candidate.
