    B. Introduction

    The teaching of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology to medical and postgraduate students has been a composite part of this department since inception. The postgraduate component of this programme is made up of four different units, viz Bacteriology, Parasitology, Virology and Mycology leading to the award of M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Over the years, the department has raised needed manpower through its postgraduate programme, in line with the philosophy of the University at large and the faculty of basic medical sciences in particular.

    C. Philosophy

    The philosophy is to produce Ph.D. graduates that are highly skilled and capable of serving as the manpower for teaching, research and professional services for the public, private and international organizations in the field of medical microbiology and parasitology

    D. Aim and Objectives

    The aims and objectives of the Masters, M.Phil, and Ph.D. degree programmes in Medical Microbiology and Parasitology are:

    1. Providing interested individuals with the necessary competencies and skills to function effectively as teachers, researchers and professionals in the health and medically related industry. This is with the view of providing students with the scientific knowledge and skills required to enhance their performance as members of the health care team in their various specialties and discipline.
    2. Acquisition of teaching, research and professional skills for imparting knowledge and service delivery in Nigeria and internationally.
    3. Producing graduates who are capable of applying scientific knowledge and principles to solve human and environmental problems.
    4. To produce scientists who are socially responsible and mindful of accepted norms and ethics.

    E. Admission Requirement

    1. On completion of the M.Sc. programme, candidates who obtained weighted score of at least 60% or a CGPA of 4.0 are eligible to proceed to Ph.D. programme in Medical Microbiology and Parasitology.
      1. Following conversion from M.Phil./Ph.D. programme, candidates are eligible to proceed to Ph.D. programme in Medical Microbiology and Parasitology.

    F. Duration of the Programmes

    1. A full-time Doctoral programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum 72 calendar months.
      1. A part-time Doctoral Programme shall run for a minimum of 60 calendar months and maximum of 96 calendar months.
      1. For extension beyond the specified maximum period, a special permission of the Postgraduate School shall be required on the recommendation of the Department.

    G. Detailed Course Description

    MIP 999 Dissertation 12 Credits

    • Graduation Requirement

    Doctorate (Ph.D.) programme in the department is primarily by research work. A Doctoral (Ph.D.) Thesis of 12 credit units must be defended before a Panel of Examiners
