B. Introduction

The programme is aimed at giving interested candidates the opportunity for thorough research into a given area of French as a discipline.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is designed to assist the Nigerian nation in giving expression to the vision of creating a people with adequate tools to meet the challenges of national development and also of harnessing its foreign language resources to meet global competitiveness. Besides, the programme provides for a high level of imaginative and communicative skill, the type of which is indispensable to building a humanistic future characterised by tolerance, security and good neighbourliness. The products of the programme will thus have been equipped with the minimum that is required for reliable competence in expressing and interpreting values of all sources and categories for the benefit of mankind and that of Nigeria in particular.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to produce motivated specialists in Literature-in-French. The Objectives are;

  1. inculcating in the students‘ ability for imaginative thought in the interpretation of texts written in French;
  2. developing the students‘ ability for critical thinking;
  3. increasing students‘ awareness of cultural values, history, sociology, psychology and cosmology of France and Francophone people;
  4. inculcating in students the techniques to organize and record thoughts in writing enhancing students‘ ability to see and imagine human complexity and broadening their intellectual horizons by enlarging their power to experience life vicariously;
  5. developing the students‘ ability to discover the aesthetic qualities of literary works written in French;
  6. producing graduates that will be capable of filling specific gaps in the manpower needs of Nigeria such as in education and other field of human endeavour.

E. Admission Requirements

The programme is open to graduates of French (with First Class, or Second Class Upper) of the University of Ilorin or any other approved University; or holders of M.A. (Literature-in-French) of the University of Ilorin or any other approved University. Exceptionally, holders of B.A. (Combined Honours) will be considered for admission.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 72 calendar months.

H. Graduation Requirements

To be awarded the Ph.D. degree in Literature-in-French, a candidate:

  1. Must have passed all the Core courses – FRE 951, 952, 954 = 5 Credits
  2. Must have successfully defended his/her thesis – FRE 999  = 12 Credits
  3. Must have satisfied all other conditions as stipulated in the regulations of the School of Postgraduate Studies.
