B. Introduction

The programme is designed to extend and expand graduate students‘ general appreciation of the significance of language in human life, through research. This is to enhance not only their oral and written competence and performance but also their analytical skills in the literary explorations.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to gear towards making tangible contributions to Arabic Language and literature, a consciousness of most advanced studies on the subject and being in the vanguard of reference in international study of the subject.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to develop highly competent, versatile and effective users of Arabic language and literature.

Objectives:

The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. equipping students with research and analytical skills in their high studies in Arabic Language and literature;
  2. exposing students to advanced knowledge of Arabic Literature sub-division such as: language in areas such as: poetry, prose, (novel, short stories, art as speech making) and play; and
  3. making students more aware of the literacy diversity and profundity of Arabic.

E. Admission Requirements

  • All candidates must pass the minimum of five O‘ Level Credit subjects (including English and Arabic) of WAEC/NECO/Senior Arabic & Islamic Studies Certificate, N. C. E. or  Diploma from a recognized University as special consideration (waiver)
  • All candidates must possess a B. A. degree in Arabic, or Arabic/Education at least a Second Class Lower Division from a recognized university, Mastery of additional African Language will be of advantage.
  • B. A. Combined Honours in Arabic and another subject in at a Second Class Lower Division
  • Bachelor‘s Degree in related courses such as Islamic Studies, Islamic Law with evidence of in-depth knowledge of Arabic.
  • All candidates shall be subjected to a selection process.
  • The candidate must have M. A. degree with 3. 5 CGPA or 60 or B
  • The Candidate must have M.Phil. in Arabic with 3. 5 CGPA or 60 or B

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. Full-time: Minimum of 36 months and a Maximum of 60 months.
    1. Part-time: Minimum of 48 months and a maximum of 72 months

G. Detailed Course Description

ALI 921 Classical Arabic Poetry I 3 Credits

In-depth study of the structure and themes of Classical Arabic poetry from C. 500

to 750 C. E. This covers the Jahili, Early Islamic and Umayyad Eras. Selected poems by the major poets of the periods should be studied in details 45h (T); C

ALI 922 Classical Arabic Poetry II. 3 Credits

In-depth study of the structure and themes of Classical Poetry of the C Abbasid Period (750 -12 58 C. E.) Selected poems of the major poets of the era to be studied in details 45h (T); C

ALI 923 Classical Arabic Prose 3 Credits

A comprehensive study of the oratory (al-khatabah), epistles (al-rasa’il), tales

(al-hikayat), anecdotes (al-nawadir), stories (al-qisas) from the Jahiliyyah Era to the end of the c Abbasid Period (c. 500 – 1258). These must include the Arabian Nights stories and Kalilah wa Dimnah. 45h (T); C

ALI 924  Three Modern Arabic Poets 3 Credits

A comprehensive study of the diwans of Al-Barudi, Khalil Mutran, Ahmad Shawqi , Hafiz Ibrahim, Macruf al-Rusafi, Abu al-Qasim al-Shabbi, Nazik al- Mala‘i kah, Fawzi al-Mac luf and Nasif al-Yaziji. Three poets should be selected for a special study. 45h (T); C

ALI 925 Doctoral Seminar I 3 Credits

Choice of a relevant topic and presentation of a well –researched seminar in Literature in Arabic. 45h (T); E

ALI 926 Modern Arabic Fiction 3 Credits

An in-depth study of two modern Arabic fiction writers and their works. These include Taha Husayn, Najib Mahfuz, Mahmud Taymur, Tayyib Salih, Tawfiq al- Hakim, al- Manfaluti, Jurji Zaydan and cAbd al-Qadir al-Mazini. 45h (T); E

ALI 927 Three Major Arabic Playwrights 3 Credit

A comprehensive study of the Arabic plays of three major playwrights to be

chosen from the following: Tawfiq al-Hakim, Ahmad Shawqi Mahmud Taymur, Najib al-Haddad, Muhammad cUthman Jalal. Izz al-Din al-Madani, Al-Tayyib al- Siddqi, Zakariyau Oseni and Abdul-Ghani Adebayo Alabi 45h (T); E

To be eligible for the award of the Ph.D. Degree in Literature in Arabic a student must  have  taken the core courses and elective course and passed 27 Credits including the  Ph.D. thesis as show below:
