B. Introduction

The programme is a research degree and awarded in recognition of original scholarship and the generation of new knowledge through self-immersion in a topic of social and personal interest and creative thought developed through analysis, synthesis, and observations. It is to develop an understanding of library and information science beyond the Master‘s degree, with particular emphasis on the conduct of original research, the production of significant research findings, and the contribution of such findings to public knowledge. The rationale for the programme is the heavy demand of doctoral holders in library and information science, which requires the highest level of personnel for the increasing number of library schools being established in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, generally. Also, the National Universities Commission requires that librarians in Nigerian universities possess the Ph.D. degree in order to justify their academic status.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is the provision of scholarship for library and information profession by promoting its research-based foundation for producing competent scholars, who will extend the frontiers of knowledge as well as prepare the professionals in the knowledge society of the 21st century.

  5. producing graduates of high standard that will staff library and information science schools in Nigeria and Africa as a whole including colleges of education and polytechnics;
