B. Introduction

The Ph.D. programme is designed for professionals who have a master‘s degree in large animal surgery and are interested in acquiring expertise in the management of complicated surgical cases in large animals. The prospective applicants will have good grades at Master‘s level.

C. Philosophy

The programme allows the professionals who excel at the Master‘s programme in large animal to improve their expertise in the management of large animal surgical patients and research.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim is to train qualified candidates in large animal surgery at the specialist level. The objectives are to:

  1. build up confidence in the candidate to become proficient and efficient in the management of large animal surgical cases, and
    1. produce professionals who will be competent to train other professionals in large animal surgery at the tertiary level.

E. Admission Requirements

Professionals seeking admission into the programme shall have the following requirements:

  1. ‗O‘ level Credits pass in five subjects including Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English language.
  2. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or its equivalent from accredited Universities.
  3. Holders of M.Sc. in Large Animals Surgery or its equivalent from accredited Universities across the globe with a weighted score average 60% or CGPA of 4.0 for a scale of 5.0.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
  2. Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 months and a maximum of 72 calendar months

G. Detailed Course Description

VSR 921:   Seminar I 1 Credit

This involves a seminar presentation on the research proposal to the post-graduate committee of the Faculty. The presentation is assessed by a panel. 45h (P); C

VSR 922 Seminar II 1 Credit

The student presents the progress report on the approved research to the postgraduate board of the Faculty. The presentation is evaluated by a panel. 45h (P); C

VSR 923 Seminar III 1 Credit

The final seminar of the research findings is presented and evaluated by a panel. 45h (P); C

VSR 999 Thesis 24 Credits

A research thesis in the approved area of study, under the supervision of a supervisory committee chaired by a major supervisor is produced. The work is original and its contribution to large animal surgery is emphasised. 1080h (P); C

H. Graduation Requirements

The candidates shall be required to have taken and passed all core courses with a minimum score of 60%. A minimum of 27 credits including a research thesis. However, candidates found deficient in some courses required for their research work and general knowledge will have courses prescribed for him/her from M.Sc. Large Animal surgery and radiology programme by the supervisory team. A candidate must pass a minimum of 27 credit units made up of the following to be awarded, the Doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree in Large Animal Surgery:
