B. Introduction

The programme was introduced in the Department to meet the needed manpower in the areas of their specialisation. This programme is designed to enhance academic research in the area of specialty. Subsequently, the programme has helped many students in the field of Islamic Studies to get jobs in tertiary institutions.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to strengthen the intellectual capacity and uplift the moral standard of students in Islamic tudies, towards equipping them with effective capacity to uphold the teachings of Islam and to foster understanding and analysis of Religious sensitivities in Nigeria.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to enable candidate demonstrate research capabilities and develop sound intellectual engagements in the fields of Islamic Studies.

Objectives:

  1. enabling students to have sound knowledge Islamic in Studies including working knowledge of Arabic language;
  2. acquainting candidates with the global trend of issues in Islamic Studies and religious understanding; and
  3. producing candidates that will compete favourably with their contemporaries in the global academic community.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. Five Credit passes in SSC/GCE O/Level or its equivalent subjects including English Language and Islamic Studies.
  2. Relevant Bachelor degree not lower than Second Class (Lower Division) from recognised universities.

iii Diploma in Arabic and Islamic Studies/NCE in Islamic Studies and other relevant courses.

The candidate must have between3.5 CGGPA or 60% overall in M.A. Islamic Studies with at least a CGPA of 3.5; or 4 and above.

  1. Must have M.Phil in Islamic Studies with a CGPA of at least 3.6.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 60 calendar months and a maximum of 84 calendar months.

G. Detailed Course Description

RIS 901    Ph.D. Protocol 6 Credits

Protocol on a topic in Islamic studies shall be prepared by Ph.D. candidates. Normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to literature review: budget, plan for implementation and other aspects required by postgraduate school guidelines. Protocol shall be examined by the department and recommended to postgraduate school for approval through faculty board of postgraduate studies. Every Ph.D. candidate is required to deliver a minimum of two seminar papers at the departmental postgraduate seminar before the defense of his/her Ph.D. thesis. 270h (P); C

RIS 997    Thesis 21 Credits

Original thesis written on the area of specialization. Topic which shall be approved by the postgraduate school on the recommendation of the department through the faculty must make original contribution in the area of specialisation to knowledge. 945h (P); C

H. Graduation Requirements

At the end of the programme, the students must have satisfied all the academic requirements as stated above and two bound copies of their thesis must be submitted to the Postgraduate School.
