Introduction
The programme is to run as an intensive academic research programme. The running of the programme is mainly directed at training the requisite manpower that will possess the capability to engage in quality teaching and research in institutes of higher learning (universities, research institutes, polytechnics, and colleges of education)in Nigeria in particular, countries in Africa, and the rest of the world.
Philosophy
The programme is geared towards building the capacity and human resources that can propel the advancement of the socio-economic and political development of a developing society like Nigeria. The programme intends to advance the realization of the objectives of the public and private sectors in Nigeria especially in capacity development and training of manpower grounded in theoretical and practical approaches in teaching, study, and conduct of research that can propel the production of knowledge that will, in turn, drive national growth and development.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of the programme is to deliver a theoretically and methodologically grounded research-led degree-awarding programme in an atmosphere that enhances independent thinking among the students on the prgramme.
Objectives:
Producing graduate students that can conduct and produce theoretically and methodologically oriented research in the area of political science of their choice; and Being among the leading Department of Political Science in the world with diverse knowledge in different areas of specialization within the discipline in orderto serve the society better.
Admission Requirements
All candidates for the programme are expected to fulfill the following requirements: Candidates must have a minimum of Five O’Level Credits including English Language, Mathematics, Government and any other two subject Hold a B.Sc. degree in Political Science from a recognized university with a minimum of Second Class Honour Lower Division.
Hold a M.Sc. degree in Political Science with an aggregate score of 60 percent and above or a CGPA 4.0 on a 5.0-point scale.
Duration of the Programme
The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 48 calendar months.
The part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 72 calendar months.
Detailed Course Description
POS 901 Advanced Research Seminar in Political Science 3 Credits Students are expected to prepare a research proposal on a topic approved by the department, to be publicly presented and defended before a panel of examiners.135h(P);C
POS 902 Advanced Research Seminar in Political Science 2 3 Credits Students to prepare, publicly present, defend and submit are search seminar that highlights findings from field study conducted before a panel of examiners.135h(P);C
POS999 Thesis 6Credits
Students are to prepare, present, defend and submit a doctoral thesis. Thesis is to be publicly presented before a panel of examiners.270h(P);C
Graduation Requirements
For a candidate to be rewarded the Ph.D. degree in Political Science, he/she is expected to have presented at least two seminars (6 Credits). This is in addition to the successful defence of the thesis before a panel of examiners.
