B. Introduction
The Ph.D degree in History and International Studies is offered with concentrations in political, economic, social, cultural, contemporary and national history. During the first semester of full- time study, doctoral students are expected to choose a researchable topic and write a proposal under a supervisor that will be defended. The Ph.D degree requires special commitment and skills. The candidate continues to see his supervisor regularly and before the completion of his programme he or she is expected to at least present two or three seminar papers that will be graded. At the completion of the writing of the well-researched original thesis the candidate is invited for internal defence. The candidate‘s internal defence enables the candidate‘s thesis to be put under serious scrutiny by fellow lecturers. At the end of the exercise, the candidate is told to effect the necessary corrections and occasionally if the lecturers are not satisfied with the candidate‘s work he or she could be told to go back to the field to gather more materials that will enhance the quality of the work. Once the supervisors are satisfied with the work, he commences the registration of the title and abstract as required by the post graduate school. It takes the post graduate school about three months to officially communicate the approval or otherwise of the success to candidate.
