Introduction

The programme is daily becoming one of the essential aspects of life that has become imperative to develop and train high level manpower at post graduate levels required for optimal health. Trends in public health care and health education have shown that the health of individual members of the community can no longer be left in the hands of government and non- governmental agencies, but in the care of skilled individuals who must take charge of their health, families and that of the community. The current climb of the University of Ilorin in the national and international limelight and its unique position geographically and politically makes it more important to run a postgraduate programmes in Health Promotion and Environmental Health Education. The programmes are domiciled in the Department of Health Promotion and Environmental Health Education.

C.  Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to sustain the tempo of academic excellence and align itself with the general philosophy of the University in terms of developing the individual student both in character and in learning.

D.  Aims and Objectives

The programme has the following objectives:

  1. promotion of desirable health practice among school children and in all levels of education through their teachers;
  2. producing teachers who have the competence to handle and coordinate all activities of the health programmes;
  3. producing teachers who have the competence to handle and cater for the health needs of the disabled
  4. producing individuals with advanced knowledge and skills in health promotion and environmental education; and
  5. producing high level manpower with appropriate skills in health intervention and advocacy in tackling mirage of communicable and non-communicable diseases that affect man.

E.    Admission Requirements

  1. The candidates must possess five credits in ‗O‘level subjects in SSCE/GCE/NABTED/NECO/Grade II or its equivalence including English and Mathematics.
  2. Candidate with M.Ed. or M.Sc. (Ed.) in Health Education of this University or any approved University recognised by the Senate, whose average grade point is not less than 60% in the course work examinations or its equivalence in their final master’s degree examination, may be admitted into this programme.
  3. Master of philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in Health Education or physical and Health Education from recognised Universities provided the candidates scored at least 60% or its equivalent in the final degree.
  4. Short listed candidate must perform very well in an interactive session (interview) to be conducted by the Department. This is an important perquisite for admission.
  • In addition, with the above conditions, all other requirements governing the admission of Master of Science M. Sc. (Ed.) are also applicable.

F.  Duration of the Programme

The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 72 calendar months. On the expiration of the maximum duration, a candidate may apply for an extension of not more than two periods of 12 calendar months after which the programme lapses.

HED 901  Municipal Sanitation    2 Credits

Attention is focused on the mean of achieving and maintaining large scale urban sanitary systems: water supply, waste disposal, solid waste management and urban town planning issues. 30h (T); C

HED 902  Epidemiology     2 Credits

Principles and methods of analytic epidemiology with particular emphasis on the design studies and analytic methods for the study of ethology factors in chronic diseases. 30h (T); C

HED 903    Practicum in Health Education        6 Credits

Opportunities in putting educational research theory into visitation to schools for observations. Discussions on health of school children and youths. Programmes of schools health education and services. Organisation and conduct of health programme in some selected schools. Student should experience visitations to health institutions other than primary and post primary schools on a 3–6 month attachment. 270h (P); C

HED 904  Current Progression in Tropical Disease Control      2 Credits

Interpretation of current findings and how they affect prevention and control measures. Some of the current activities in the control. Prevention and management of tropical diseases will be discussed. Case studies on health problems of school children will be discussed and analysed. 30h (T); E


HED 905     Research Design and Analysis in Health Education     2 Credits

Study of various experimental research designs. Analysis of co-variance. Mixed and random models. Critical review and evaluation of selected studies in health education locating. Formulating and solving problems. Indepth exposure to various types and methods of research. 30h (T); C

HED 906    Advanced Statistical Method in Education       3 Credits

Measurement of relationship. Types. Uses. Partial and multiple correlational analysis. Test of significance f-test. Analysis of variance. Regression analysis. Causal model and multi-dimential measurement. 45h (T); C

HED 907    Computer Literacy and Appreciation     2 Credits

Introduction course of general interests to the health education scientist. Treating the actual and potential role of the computer is required as a basis. Fundamentals of information systems. Design principles. Inputs: storage and maintenance. Output and vocabulary control. Monitoring and management and performance evaluation need to be taught. Consideration is to be given topics of a particular current interest in both the research and application of computer science. Application of computer analysis of research study. 30h (T); E

HED 910    Ph.D. Seminar       2 Credits

Analysis and discussion of current issues and problems inhealth education. Review of current literature in research and contemporary trends in school health and promotion, human sexuality reproductive and family health, life style and wellness and primary health care in Nigeria and other countries. 90h (P); E

HED 999   Thesis      5 Credits

Selection of a research title under the guidance of a supervisor and presentation of the completed thesis report. 225h (P); C

Graduation Requirements

Ph.D. students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Ph.D. is a full time course for research and other academic works, students are expected to stay in residence for at least 24 calendar months.
  2. Ph.D. students are expected to attend all Departmental seminars, partake in the arrangement of same and present at least two (2) Seminar papers on his research to the Department.
  3. No Ph.D. student will be deemed ready to present his/her thesis proposal until he/she has presented at least one seminar paper.
  4. Ph.D. students will be required to pass a comprehensive examination as part of the requirements. The comprehensive examination normally is on different aspects of health education curriculum.
  5. He/she is expected to have successfully presented his/her thesis proposal, internal defense and final defense before a constituted panel of examiners by the Department and the Postgraduate School.
