Introduction

The programme is the study of the earth as the home of man. And is adjusting its scope and content to address the adverse consequences of such man-environment relations. The environment, which the geographer studies, has been an issue of great concern over the three decades. Available areas of specialization for Ph.D. degree in Geography and Environmental Management include: Agro-climatology, Bio-geography, Climatology, Development Planning, Disaster Management/Environmental Hazards, Environmental Management, Geomorphology, Fluvial Geomorphology, Gender and Development, Ground water Hydrology, Hydrology, Industrial Development, Land Resources Evaluation, Land Resources Management, Medical Geography, Population Studies, Recreation and Tourism, Regional Development and Planning, Rural Development, Soil Geography, Transport Geography, and Water Resources).

Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is the development of excellent skills and competences in preservation, conservation and sustainable management of the local, regional and nation environment through a commitment to values and ethics, quality and relevance.

Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to train future Geographers and Environmentalists who possess competence in both theoryand practice of environmental issues and are adequate in facing the challenges of the dynamic human and natural environment.

The objectives are to train the students to;

acquire appropriate research skills and knowledge;

equip the students with the skills and competences necessary to grapple with contemporary environmental challenges;

have the knowledge of the processes which transform the environment; and conduct environmental impact assessment and understand the methods of addressing environmental issues.

Admission Requirements

The  candidates are required to possess the following:

O’Level Credits or its equivalent in five subjects including English Language, Geography and any three from Arts/Social Science/Science and at least a Pass in Mathematics.

Candidates must possess good Bachelor degree from a recognized university and must obtain a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in Geography, Environmental Management, Urban and Regional Planning or other related disciplines.

On completion of the M.Sc. programme, candidates who obtained a weighted score between 60% and above would be eligible to proceed to Ph.D. programme in Geography.

Duration of the Programme

The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.

The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 72 calendar months.

Detailed Course Description

GPE901               Graduate Seminar I       2Credits

Each student is required to present seminar on the proposed research within six months of registration. Critical presentation and discussion of each student’s research topic with emphasis on literature review, methodology and highlights of the proposed research work. Oral presentation must be graded by academic staff in the Department. 90h (P); C

GPE902         Graduate Seminar II          2Credits

Each student is required to present a second seminar on the preliminary      findings      from the field work highlighting part of the outcome of their research work.90h(P);C

GPE992:             Research Methods       3Credits

The course is designed to provide students with basic training in research approaches, methods and techniques so that they are able to under take high quality independent research in their chosen subject areas within the programme. Researches in geography and the environment, Research problem identification and formulation, Research process: research questions, literature review, theory and hypothesis; Research design: operationalization, qualitative and quantitative approaches, sampling strategies, research proposal: preparation of a proposal for scientific research, research ethics and research execution: Data collection, data analysis, Preparation of a good research report or thesis.45h(T):C

GPE993 Philosophy and Methodology in Geography      3Credits

The fundamental nature and scope of the field of Geographic perspectives on the development of geographical sciences. Phases of development of geographic thought. Transition from medieval to modern geography, National schools of geography. Issues in geographical enquiry such as Environmentalism, Possibilism, Probabilism, Humanism, Positivism, Idealism, Materialism, etc. systematic versus Regional Geography. Major themes in Geographical Research; the quantification debate, the systems approach, the welfare approach, Marxist/Radical alternative perspectives. Techniques in Geography: Stochastic Modeling, models, paradigms, explanations and predictions. The Computer and GIS revolution in Geography, Development of Geographic thought in Nigeria.45h(T):C

GPE994 Advanced Quantitative Techniques        3Credits

Data analysis: criteria for choice of statistical test; Hypothesis testing. Parametric methods: analysis of variance, correlation analysis, regression analysis, factor analysis, trend surface analysis. Non parametric methods: Chi-square, Kruskal Wallis, ANOVA etc. Use of computer for data analysis.45h(T):C

GPE 995         Entrepreneurial Studies     3 Credits

Objective of course is to encourage effective and successful management of small business or training for future managers who will have contact in one way or the other with small firms investors and government officials. Course outline: small firm characteristic and trend, start-up situation and development of business plans. Venture and expansion capital, cost and benefits of different sources of problem and prospect of small business generally and of small scale industries in particular. Case studies of entrepreneurs and small capital firms(Owners/Managers). Student’s actual proposals made to panel of venture capital firms, Banks and other financial institutions.30h(T);45h(P);C

GPE999               Thesis           12Credits

Original research study carried out by the student with approval of the department and supervised by a member of staff.540h(P);C

The programme consists of course work, research work and seminars. To be awarded the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Geography, a candidate must pass 30 Credits as follows:
