  • Introduction

The programme is designed to train specialists to manage educational system at all levels. The programme prepares specialists in educational planning and administration. The document defines the benchmarks and minimum academic standard for Doctor of Philosophy degree programme in Educational Management. The BMAS are designed to develop capacity building in areas of ICT, entrepreneurship/studies in response to current realities, global competitiveness and relevance: it is to enable graduates become competencies in research and development and make graduates to demonstrate problem solving capacity through critical innovative and creative thinking.

C.  Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is the development of professional education managers who will be involved in social engineering of the education sector either as teachers, managers of human and material resources in educational institutions as well as educational researches of repute.

D.  Aim and Objectives

The main aim of the programme is to train the necessary high level manpower required in educational management for the national development.

Objectives:

  1. developing professional expertise of students;
  2. developing knowledgeable scholars who will provide leadership in professional practicing and intellectual competence in educational development;
  3. developing competent researchers in educational management theory and practice for the greater benefit of the Nigerian education system;
  4. preparing education scholars who would teach and provide leadership at different levels of higher education;
  5. producing scholars who would compete with similar scholars from any part of the world and carry out advanced research; and
  6. providing assistance for capacity building for graduates involved in teaching, planning and administration of education at various levels.

E.  Admission Requirements

The Criteria for admission into Ph.D. programme in Educational Management shall be as follows:

  1. ‗O‘ Level Credits or equivalent in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. Candidate must have a Master degree in any relevant area of specialisation in Educational Management with a minimum CGPA of 4.0 or 60%.
  3. In all cases, candidates are expected to undergo a selection process involving tests and/or interviews.

F.  Duration of the programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
  2. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

RME 901    Educational Research Methods     3 Credits

Concept and nature of research. Scientific processes in research. Problem definition and variable identification. Sources of research topics. Theory construction and hypotheses formulation. Techniques for literature review. Principle of design. Instrumentation. Data collection. Techniques for data analysis and presentation of result. Introduction to computer and data analysis. RME 902      Advanced Educational Statistics         3 Credit

Concepts of educational statistics. Role of statistics in education. Descriptive statistics and the various areas of application in education: classroom data, school records, school demography, social relations in school, school administration and finances. Inferential statistics. Population and sampling theory. Non-parametric statistics in education. Hypothesis assumptions: types, applications and limitation. Nature of parametric statistics, types and applications in education. Statistical models in education. Application and limitations: correlation, univariate and multivariate analysis of educational data. Nature of significance and problems of inferences. Application of computer in various phases. Analytical evaluation of, at least, ten masters‘dissertations and five doctoral thesis in educational management across Nigeria: problems, purposes, significance, scope and limitations and variables used. EMA 908   Postgraduate Seminar     3 Credits

Students are supposed to identify suitable topics in their area of specialisation and present two seminar papers at the departmental seminar, which will be assessed at the end of the oral presentation. 45h (P); E

EMA 999   Thesis    10 Credits

Candidates are required to demonstrate research competencies by selecting a thesis topic in their relevant areas of specialisation. Research is carried out by the individual student under the guidance of a competent supervisor according to graduate school requirements. Candidate is expected to make some significant contributions to knowledge. Thesis is defended before an appropriately constituted examining committee chaired by the head of the department. External examiner‘s verdict shall override all other decisions. 450h (P); C

  • Graduation Requirements

A candidate must have fulfilled the following conditions to be awarded a Ph.D. degree in Educational Management.

  • Pass a minimum of 40 Credits, including all the Courses as follows:
    • 3 Core courses of 3 Credits each.
    • A minimum of 4 courses of 3 Credits each in the areas of specialisation.
  • Thesis of 10 Credits.
