B.                 Introduction

The programme was designed to meet the manpower needs across the world. Students who successfully complete the Ph.D. programme would have acquired significant research and analytical skills in relevant areas of counselling. The knowledge acquired should substantially enhance graduates‘ prospects of gaining employment in various settings e.g. tertiary institutions, rehabilitation centres and hospitals.

C.                 Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is designed to provide opportunities for postgraduate students to acquire advanced knowledge and skills in Educational Guidance and Counselling. The programme offers opportunity to students to acquire knowledge and skills in educational research, psychological principles and counselling strategies for handling clients‘ challenges at different levels of operation such as schools, rehabilitation centres and private organisations. The main philosophy of the Ph.D. programme in Educational Guidance and Counselling is to develop high profile professional educators who are social engineers of change through education either as professional teachers, counsellors, researchers or managers of educational institutions and end-user organisations.

D.                 Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to develop professional expertise of students in area of Educational Guidance and Counselling.

Objectives:

  1. developing knowledgeable scholars who will provide leadership in counselling profession and intellectual competence in education and other relevant organisations;
  2. producing professional counsellors who possess relevant knowledge and skills needed for effective delivery of guidance and counselling services.
  3. developing competent researchers in educational theory and practice for the Nigerian educational system; producing educators who are committed to the transformation of counselling in Nigeria through effective application and utilisation of ICT in both national and global contexts; and
  4. producing scholars who would compete with similar scholars from any part of the world and carry out advanced research.

E.                 Admission Requirements

Candidates for the Ph.D. Degree programme in Educational Guidance and Counselling must possess all of the following:

  1. ―O‖ Level Credits in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics;
  2. Master degree in Educational Guidance and Counselling or Counselling Psychology with an average of a Ph.D. score (at least 60% or its equivalence) in the courses offered;
  3. First degree honours in Education with a minimum of Second Class Honours Lower Division; and
  4. First degree in other disciplines with a minimum of Second Class Honours, Lower Division plus (PGDE) at Credit Level from a recognised university.

F.                 Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 18 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.
  2. The Sandwich/Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months.
  3. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

Descriptive and inferential statistics in educational research. Use of analysis of variance (ANOVA). Analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA). Stepwise multiple regression. Test of significance and post-hoc tests. 45h (T); C

EDT 903         Information and Communication Technology                   3 Credits

Computer language. Basic programming and use of computers in educational research. Computer packages. Interpretation of computer print-outs and practical application. Practical experiences in the production of computer print-outs selected from collected data. 30h (T); 45h (P); C

Historical background. Development and applications of the vocational theories: Holland, Roe, Ginzberg, Super, Crites. Examination and critiques of available literature and relevance to the Nigerian setting. 30h (T); E

EGC 911        Laboratory/Clinical Experiences                                        2 Credits

Discussion. Laboratory activities. Clinical assessment and interpretation of standardised measures of cognitive and academic functioning as part of a comprehensive evaluation for diagnostic and intervention purposes. To qualify for the award of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Educational Guidance and Counselling, a candidate must pass a minimum of 20 Credits including all Core courses, successfully defend a thesis and pass at least 3 Credits of Elective courses as follows:
