B. Introduction

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Curriculum Development is appropriate for Curriculum developers seeking advanced knowledge and skills in curriculum development. This degree is appropriate for teaching in relevant higher educational institutions which produce Curriculum developers.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of Ph.D. in Curriculum Development is to equip Ph.D. students in Curriculum Development with enough advanced research knowledge and skills so that they could make significant contributions to knowledge in their respective areas and also to be able to provide competent leadership in their field of research.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of Ph.D programme in Curriculum Development is to equip the students with relevant knowledge, research competence, professional skills and attitudes to effectively

function and practise as high level manpower in the discipline. The objectives of Ph.D. programme in Curriculum Development are to:

  1. develop knowledgeable scholars who will provide leadership in professional practice and intellectual competence in education;
  2. produce educators who are to develop professional expertise of students;
  3. knowledgeable in and committed to the implementation of National Policy on Education;
  4. develop competent researchers in educational theory and practice for the Nigeria education system;
  5. empower educators who can propel social change through education both intellectually, in attitudes, skills, values and worldviews.

E.  Admission Requirements

The criteria for admission into the Ph.D. in Curriculum Development shall be as follows:

  1. ‗O‘ Level credits or its equivalent in five relevant subjects which include English Language.
  2. All candidates must have a Master degree in any relevant area of Specialization in Education with a minimum CGPA of 4.0 or 60%.
  3. Holders of M.Phil. degree in Education with minimum of 60%.
  4. In all cases, candidates may be expected to undergo a selection process involving tests and/or interviews.
  5. The University matriculation requirements must be satisfied.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time Ph.D. programme in Curriculum Development shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months or 60 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme should run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 72 calendar months.
  3. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the University senate shall be required.

RME 901 Advanced Research Methods in Education 3 Credits

Concept and nature of research: scientific processes in research, problem definition, variable identification; sources of research topics, theory construction and hypotheses formulation, formulation, techniques for literature review, principles of design, instruction, data collection, techniques for data analysis and presentation of results. 45h (T); C

RME 902 Advanced Educational Statistics 3 Credits

Concept of educational statistics. Role of statistics in education, descriptive statistics and the various areas of application in education; classroom data, school records, school demography, social relations in school, school administration and finances. Inferential statistics, population and sampling theory, non-parametric statistics in education, hypothesis assumptions, types, applications and limitations. 45h (T); C


EDT 903 Information and Communication Technology 3 Credits

In-depth knowledge of skills and techniques of data processing in education. Overview                  of sources, storage, retrieval and dissemination of data/information. Programme design and management of data. Management of data bank. General problem solving with the use information technology and hands-on experience. 45h (T); C

AED 904 Thesis Proposal Seminar I 3 Credits

Readings, assignments, discussion and presentation of reports on selected topics by each student in one chosen area of specialization as approved by the Department. Course shall be examined by means of a term paper. Stage I 135 h (P); C

AED 905 Thesis Proposal Seminar II 3 Credits

Readings, assignments, discussion and presentation of reports on selected topics by each student in one chosen area of specialization as approved by the Department. Course shall be examined by means of a term paper. Stage II 135h (P); C

AED 906 Conceptual Research Model Building in Educational Research 2 Credits

Course involves conceptual framework in educational research emphasizing conceptualization of the research work. 30h (T); C

AED 999 Thesis 10 Credits

Candidates are required to demonstrate research competencies by selecting a topic in their relevant areas of specialization. Research is carried out by individual student under the guidance of a competent supervisor according to postgraduate school requirements. Candidate is expected to make some significant contributions to knowledge. Thesis is defended before an appropriately constituted examining committee chaired by the Head of Department. External examiner‘s verdict shall override all other decisions. 450 h (P); C

  • Graduation Requirements

For a candidate to be awarded a Ph.D. degree in Curriculum Development, such a candidate must pass a minimum of 40 credits including all elective and core courses

A candidate must have fulfilled the following conditions to be awarded a Ph.D. degree in Education.

  1. Pass a minimum of 40 Credit units, including all the courses as follows:

3 core courses of 3 credit units each                                         9

A minimum of 4 courses of 3 credit units each in the area of specialization                                                                          21

Ph.D. Thesis of 10 credit units                                               10

  1. A candidate is entitled to a waiver of 12 credit units from the Master degree, provided those courses are judged to be identical and at the same depth to those offered by the given University as may be decided by the Postgraduate Committee.
