B. Introduction

The programme is designed to develop highest level of manpower with respect to teaching and research in the field of Computer Science. Holders of the degree are expected to demonstrate required expertise in conducting and reporting research in a chosen area of the discipline.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to provide in-depth, cutting-edge curriculum that allows students to gain the required expertise in a chosen area of specialisation within Computer Science for technological advancement through research and innovation.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to produce graduates in Computer Science with required expertise to initiate, conduct and report researches in Computer Science. Objectives:

  1. giving award of Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science degree to Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree holders in Computer Science; and
  2. giving award of Doctor Philosophy in Computer Science degree to Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree holders in related programmes or fields.

E. Admission Requirements

Ph.D. programme in Computer Science is open to candidates who have:

  1. Five Credit passes at O‘ Level, subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
  2. Obtained a weighted average score of 60% and above in their academic Master degree in Computer Science from University of Ilorin or any other recognised university.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 38 calendar months and a maximum of 48 calendar months.
    1. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 48 calendar months and a maximum of 66 calendar months.

G. Detailed Course Description

CSC 928 Postgraduate Seminar in Computer Science 2 Credits

Presentation of seminars on original research topic in computer science. 90h (P); C

CSC 932 Advanced Research Methodology in Computer Science 3 Credits

Research design in computer science, advanced modeling and simulation, evaluating research contribution in computer science, research process in Computer Science, developing theoretical framework in computer Science. 45h (T); 30h (P); C

CSC 999 Thesis 12 Credits

Independent research in any recognized area of computer science under the supervision of a qualified member of staff.

H. Graduation Requirements

  1. Candidates are required to carry out original research in computer science and to submit a thesis not exceeding 45,000 words in length and abstract not more than 500 words on a topic chosen in consultation with their supervisor and approved by the Department.
  2. The degree shall be awarded on the basis of a thesis resulting from an original independent research and Open Oral Examination.
