B. Introduction

The programme was introduced in the Department to meet the needed manpower in the areas of specialisation. This programme is aimed at producing human resources in the society vis-a-vis for further enhancement of human intellectuality. Subsequently, the programme has helped many students in the field of Comparative Religious Studies to get jobs in tertiary institutions.

C. Philosophy

The programme is anchored on strengthening the intellectual capacity of students in Religious Knowledge towards equipping them with effective capacity to foster understanding and analysis of Religious sensitivities in Nigeria and the world.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to enable candidate demonstrate research capabilities and develop sound intellectual engagements in the field of Comparative Religious Studies.

Objectives:

  1. enabling students to have sound knowledge of history and science of religions;
  2. acquainting candidates with the global trend of the interface of science and religion, with emphasis on African perspectives; and
  3. producing candidates that will compete favourably with their contemporaries in the global academic community.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. Five Credit passes in SSC/GCE or its equivalent O/Level subjects including English Language and Christian Religious Knowledge.
  2. Must have at least a CGPA of at least 3.5 in M.A. Comparative Religious Studies.
  3. Must have M.Phil in Comparative Religious Studies if below 3.5 CGPA.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 60 calendar months and a maximum of 84 calendar months

G. Detailed Course Description

RCR 901   Ph.D. Protocol 6 Credits

Protocol on a topic in comparative religious studies shall be prepared by Ph.D. candidates. Normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to literature review: budget, plan for implementation and other aspects required by postgraduate school guidelines. Protocol shall be examined by the department and recommended to postgraduate school for approval through faculty board of postgraduate studies. Each Ph.D. candidate is required to deliver a minimum of two seminar papers at the departmental postgraduate seminar before the defense of his/her Ph.D. thesis. 270h (P); C

RCR 997   Thesis 21 Credits

Original thesis written on the area of specialisation. Topic which shall be approved by the postgraduate school on the recommendation of the department through the faculty must make original contribution in the area of specialization to knowledge. 540h (P); C

H. Graduation Requirements

At the end of the programme, the students must have satisfied all the academic requirements as stated above and two bound copies of their thesis must be submitted to the Postgraduate School.
