B. Introduction

The programme is designed to extend and expand graduate students‘ general appreciation of the significance of language in human life, through research. This is to enhance not only their oral and written competence and performance but also their analytical skills in the literary explorations.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to make tangible contributions to Arabic Language and literature, be consciousness of most advanced studies on the subject and being in the vanguard of reference in international study of the subject.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to develop highly competent, versatile and effective users of Arabic language and literature. The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. equipping students with research and analytical skills in their high studies in Arabic Language and literature;
  2. exposing students to advanced knowledge of Arabic Literature sub-division such as: language in areas such as: poetry, prose, (novel, short stories, art as speech making) and play; and
  3. making students more aware of the literacy diversity and profundity of Arabic.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. All candidates must pass the minimum of five O‘ Level Credit subjects (including English and Arabic ) of WAEC/NECO/Senior Arabic & Islamic Studies Certificate, N. C. E. or Diploma from a recognized University as special consideration (waiver)
  2. All candidates must possess a B. A. degree in Arabic, or Arabic/Education at least a Second Class Lower Division from a recognized university, Mastery of additional African Language will be of advantage.
  3. B. A. Combined Honours in Arabic and another subject in at a Second Class Lower Division
  4. Bachelor‘s Degree in related courses such as Islamic Studies, Islamic Law with evidence of in-depth knowledge of Arabic.All candidates shall be subjected to a selection process.The candidate must have M. A. degree with 3. 5 CGPA or 60 or B
  5. The Candidate must have M.Phil. in Arabic with 3. 5 CGPA or 60 or B

F. Duration of the Programme Ph.D. Programme

  • Full-time: Minimum of 36 months and a maximum of 60 months.
  • Part-time: Minimum of 48 months and a maximum of 72 months.

ALA 921  Advanced Qur’anic Rhetoric 3 Credits

in-depth study of Qur‘anic Rhetoric (al-Balāghat al-Qur‘āani-yyah): al-Bayan, al-Mac ani and al-Badic. The major scholars of Qur‘ānic Rhetoric and their views. The concept of the inimitability of the Qur‘ān. Selected works on the subject for study. 45h (T); C

ALA 922  Arabic Semiotics 3 Credits

Introduction to the science of sign systems in Arabic. Metalanguage of semiotics and semiotic analysis. Practical application of semiotic theories to literary and non-literary texts. Signs in cyber communication. Copious examples to be drawn from Classical and Modern Arabic texts. 45h (T); C

ALA 923 Practical Translation From Arabic 3 Credits

Definition and classes of translation. Major Arabic works on literature, religion, science, banking, finance, business and Law to be selected for translation into English, Yoruba or Hausa. Methods and approach of Translation. More and advance analysis of literary translation. 45h (T); C

ALA 924 Practical Translation into Arabic 3 Credits

Practical translation and analysis from English, Hausa or Yoruba to Arabic of technical and scientific texts relating to various disciplines: science, engineering, medicine. economics, technology, sports etc. Duties and qualifications of a good translator or interpreter. Choice of a relevant topic and presentation of a seminar paper in the area of Arabic Language or Applied Linguistics. 45h (T); C

ALA 926 Stylistics in Arabic 3 Credits

Theories of stylistics and its relation with literature and linguistics. Literary devices and feature of the different Arabic Literary genres: poetry, fiction, drama, epistles and public speeches. Application of the principles of discourse and text linguistics analysis to specific Arabic texts. 45h (T); E

G. Graduation Requirements

To be eligible for the award of the Ph.D. Degree in Arabic Language, a student must have taken the core courses and elective course and passed at least 27 Credits including the thesis as stated below:
