Introduction
The Department of Political Science at the University of Ilorin welcomes prospective students to the Postgraduate Diploma in International Affairs and Diplomacy. The PGDIAD programme is designed to be an intensive professional Postgraduate Diploma programme to meet the increasing demands of the labour market for specialist in the area of International Affairs and Diplomacy in Nigeria and beyond.
Philosophy
The philosophy that informed the running of a Postgraduate Diploma in International Affairs and Diplomacy by the Department of Political Science, University of Ilorin is to offer the chance to candidates that are interested in acquiring basic knowledge about the working of the international system.
Aims and Objectives
The programme is intended and designed to turn out manpower with skills and knowledge in international affairs and diplomacy through taught courses and project writing with professional bias and on part-time basis, with a view to taking care of the needs of the students. It is also intended to encourage proper interaction between lecturers and practitioners of International Affairs and Diplomacy for the overall development of the Department.
Admission Requirements
The admission requirement for entrance in to the Postgraduate Diploma in International Affairs and Diplomacy is the possession of First-Degree certificate irrespective disciplines and grade. Aside this candidate that holds the HND certificate with a minimum of pass grade can also be admitted into the programme.
Duration of the Programme
The programme runs for 12 calendar months divided into two equal parts. January-June devoted purely to lectures while July- December will be for both lectures and project writing. Lectures holds on weekends; Saturdays- 8.00a.m. – 7.00p.m.
Detailed Course Description
IAD701 Theories of International Relations 3credits
The course will entail a review of the contending theories of international relations with emphasis on idealist and realist theories, integration, balance of power, decision making, games, among others and their contemporary relevance. The over all objective of the course is to acquaint students with the necessary theoretical tools available in international relations.45h(T);C
IAD702 International Politics 3credits
The course is an examination of the contemporary international politics, identification of major approaches and concepts: an examination of actors in international politics; interstate relations and the dynamics of changes that have taken place in international politics.45h(T);C
IAD703 Evolution of Diplomacy 3credits
The course will take students through a review of history and theories of diplomacy; differences between old and modern diplomacy, contemporary diplomacy, Foreign Service and diplomacy, secrecy and diplomacy, etc.45h(T);C
IAD704 The Practice of Diplomacy 3credits
This course is concerned with the practical aspects of diplomacy. Issues such as diplomatic ethics, language, norms, and immunities are to be discussed. Emphasis will also be on the organization of Foreign Service, functions and organization of foreign missions, relationship between foreign missions and the parent ministry, types of diplomacy and the impact of high information technology on diplomacy, etc.45h(T);C
IAD705 Principles of International Law 2credits
This course discusses the functional analysis of the basic principles of international law and the conduct of international affairs; restraint on the use of force in international relations, treaties, conventions. The doctrine Universal jurisdiction, war crimes, law of the sea among other issues will be also be discussed.30h(T);E
IAD706 Foreign Policy Analysis 3Credits
The course will entail discussion focus on the review of the models and approaches in the analyses and explanations of foreign policy formulation and implementation processes. It will also entail explanation of the significances of the political, economic and military aspects of foreign policy.45h(T);C
IAD707 International Organizations 2Credits
The course will examine the origin, evolution and theoretical basis of international organizations, contemporary issues concerning international organizations as well as the typology of international organizations and their overall relevance in the conduct of inter-state.30h(T);E

This course will engage in an analysis of the political and economic dynamics of interstate transactions; an examination of the causes and nature of interdependence and its effects on third World; Debt Crisis; Trade Rounds, WTO, Development underdevelopment.30h(T);E
IAD709 Principles and Conduct of Nigeria’s Foreign Policy 3Credits
This course focuses on the goals, objectives and instruments as well as the underlining principles of Nigeria foreign policy. An attempt will be made to survey the conduct of Nigerian Foreign Policy since independence.45h(T);C
IAD710 Africa in World Affairs 2Credits
This course examines the historical background of Africa‘s integration into the global system; Africa and contemporary international environment; economic and political issues; the politics of de-colonization and crisis of post-colonial states in Africa, AU. The course focuses on the nature and causes of conflicts in Africa; ital so examines the conflict prevention and management models; border disputes and regional security concerns with specific case studies. The course will examine the changing scope and tenets of international legal order; it simplications on third world; Universal Jurisdiction; Genocide, War Crimes, International Criminal court (ICC), Tribunals, etc.30h(T);E
IAD715 International Sports 2Credits
This course will focus on the international politics of sports; the use of sport as an instrument of international politics; as a foreign policy tools, its administration across territorial boundaries. An attempt will also be made to examine the problems facing global sports e.g., drug; sharp practices etc.30h(T);E
IAD716 South East Asia 2Credits
This will entail a review of the politics, economic, social relations and trajectory of development in select country case studies in South East Asia. Particular attention will be focus on the Asian tigers; South Korea; Thailand, Malaysia Singapore noting their rising profile in World affairs and lessons for Africa. As home to the fastest growing economies in the world the region holds a lot of prospects for other third world countries and their citizens.30h(T);E

This course focus on the application of research tools in problem solving; ethical consideration and objectivity, various scientific methods, case studies, survey; data gathering analysis and generalizations.45h(T);C

Graduation Requirements
To qualify for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in International Affairs and Diplomacy PGDIAD, candidates must pass up to 35 credits including all core courses (29 Credit Units) and at least (6 Credit Units) from the list of elective courses. The pass mark is set at 50%.
