B. Introduction

The MLIS programme is to respond to higher level manpower needs of libraries and other information-related centres in the country and beyond. The programme provides an opportunity to graduates of library schools as well as others from diverse disciplines to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills for identifying, acquiring, organizing, and disseminating information in libraries and other information-related centres. By nurturing research, innovation and service, the programme offers high quality student-centered training necessary to prepare the students for advancement in their academic career.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is the preparation of students for scholarship in library and information science practice, and promoting the research-based foundation within the librarianship profession. This philosophy focuses on producing competent information professionals, who will provide modern library and information services to clientele and extend the frontiers of knowledge through research by solving contemporary problems in the library world.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to equip the students with competences and skills required to function effectively in library and information settings, globally.

Objectives:

  1. providing its students with training at the leadership level for the library and information science profession;
  2. preparing the students to be able to demonstrate the required skills for in-depth study of recent developments and advances in the library and information science field; and
  3. preparing the students for leadership positions in libraries and information-related organisations globally.

E. Admission Requirements

Candidates that will be eligible for admission into the programme should satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Five ‗O‘ Level Credit pass in Arts, Social Sciences or Sciences including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. A first degree in Library and Information Science from any recognised university with at least a Second Class (Lower Division).
  3. A first degree in any discipline outside Library and Information Science, from any recognised university, with at least a Second Class (Lower Division).
  4. Candidates with Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science with minimum pass at Credit Level.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 18 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months.
