Introduction
A warm welcome from the Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin to Master of Industrial and Labour Relations (MILR) students. MILR degree programme is an intensive course of study designed to meet the growing demands for specialist in Labour and Industrial Relations in Nigeria and beyond.
Philosophy
The general philosophy of the Programme is the development of the total being through an enhanced capacity to direct the trajectory of development in a complex and industrializing society within the framework of a fast changing global environment. The philosophy also embodies the development of the mind through theoretical and empirical knowledge to encourage individual self-reliance.
Aim and Objectives
To broaden the participant’s knowledge of personnel management.
To enhance the professional ability of the participant in managing the country’s industrial
system and
To expose the participants to the existing industrial relations system and theories the world over so as to be able to adapt them to the Nigerian situation appropriately.
Admission Requirements
The criteria for admission into MILR programme are as follows:
Candidates must possess a minimum of 5 O’level credits including English Language
Candidates with at least Third Class Bachelor‘s degree in any discipline from an approved University
Candidates will be subjected to passing a qualifying examination to be administered by the Department.
Duration of the Programme
MILR programme runs on a full-time basis only. The programme shall run for a minimum of eighteen (18) months and a maximum of thirty (30) months. The external examiner system shall be used at the end of the programme to assess courses and thesis. The thesis shall be defended orally by the student before a panel of internal and external examiners, which shall comprise:

MIR841 Industrial Relations: Theory and System 3Credits
An overview of the theories and system of industrial relations, analysis of models of industrial relations with particular reference to contemporary issues like industrial conflict, wage determination and allocative bargaining process45h(T);C
MIR842 Labour Law 3Credits
History of legislation in the area administration, the origin and purpose of certain legislations like the Trade Union Acts, Labour Acts and Trade Dispute Acts, Labour Law as related to trade unionism, industrial courts and arbitration panels, trade union activities and strategies.45h(T);C
MIR843 Advanced Social Research Methods 3Credits

MIR846 Computer Appreciation in Sociological Analysis 3Credits
The practical application of computer software in quantitative and qualitative data analysis with particular emphasis on some computer software such as Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)and other latest software packages such as Epidemiological Information (Epi Info), N- Vivo, Microsoft Excel and other data analysis software. Emphasis would also be placed on the use of computers in sampling designs and selection, sampling distribution and parameter estimation. Furthermore, the use of computers in hypothesis testing, using correlation and regression analyses, chi-square, and other inferential statistical tools will be presented and discussed. In addition, students should also be introduced to the use of PowerPoint and other relevant packages useful for report presentation and analysis.45h(T);C

The psychology of industrial relations, industrial organization as a reflection of human psychology, the psychology of worker as an impetus to organizational productivity, need to develop positive psyche among the workers in the organization, improving the psychology of the employer through various means such as motivation, moral boosting, harmonious relationship etc. Industrial relations theories as theories of human psychology, the use and application of psychological theories to industrial organization, areas of particular interest include attitudes, morale and group processes, leadership types, psychological explanation of industrial behaviours, using the knowledge of industrial psychology to enhance positive work behaviour and discourage negative work behaviours.45h(T);E
