B. Introduction

The Doctor of Medicine (M.D) is usually earned in most universities on

the basis of the applicant‘s scientific ability and knowledge. The M.D degree in Chemical Pathology represents the results of the original research of such candidates. The Doctor of Medicine degree in Chemical Pathology is being packaged to impact cutting-edge skills and knowledge to qualified persons, and by so doing, produce highly skilled teaching and research personnel at the highest level of the Chemical Pathology. The programme will domicile in the department of Chemical Pathology and Immunology in Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the Doctor of Medicine degree in Chemical Pathology is to explore wide range of research subspecialties in Chemical Pathology; to develop and promote critical, analytical and creative thinking skills relating to biomedical research; and to acquire cutting-edge expertise in advanced theories and technologies in the fields of Chemical Pathology.

D. Aim and Objectives

The Doctor of Medicine degree in Chemical Pathology aims at training MB;BS and holders of Fellowship in Chemical Pathology who will contribute to, and advance the frontiers of knowledge in the ever-evolving fields of Chemical Pathology through high quality research.

E. Admission Requirements

Candidates seeking admission for Doctor of Medicine degree in Chemical Pathology in addition to meeting the general requirement for admission to the University, must possess the following qualifications from recognized institutions:

  • MB;BS degree (or its equivalent) with Fellowship of either National Postgraduate Medical College (NPMC) in Chemical Pathology or West Africa Postgraduate Medical College (Laboratory Medicine) in Chemical Pathology. Other equivalent certificate from postgraduate college outside the country may be admitted.

F. Duration of the Programme

  • The full-time Doctor of Medicine Degree in Chemical Pathology shall run for a minimum duration of twenty-four (24) months and maximum of thirty-six (36) months.
  • The part-time Doctor of Medicine Degree in Chemical Pathology shall run for a minimum duration of thirty-six (36) months and maximum of forty-eight (48) months.

G.  Details of Courses for M.D in Chemical Pathology

CPY 999 Thesis 20 Credits

The thesis for M. D. in Chemical Pathology would be by Portfolio of already published researches. The thesis for M. D. in Chemical Pathology shall cover a topic in one of the following areas of specialization; Clinical Enzymology, Lipidology, Proteomics, Clinical Endocrinology, Metabolomics, Clinical Toxicology, Metabolic medicine and other specializations approved from time to time by the Senate of the University. 900h (P); C

  • Graduation Requirement

Form of Presentation of Thesis: The thesis is to be written in the English language. It must be satisfactory in literary presentation. The said thesis must be based on some knowledge of the subject of which it treats and embodied original observations either clinical or experimental. The work done by the candidate should result in an original contribution to knowledge deserving publication (if not already published).

It must be submitted in a form that is suitable for publication or it may be submitted in an abridged form. It must be accompanied with a short abstract, which must be at most 400 words. The length of the dissertation should normally be about 85,000 to 90,000 words including appendices and case reports.

Note:

Candidates portfolio of researches and publications already published as a single or lead author or have been produced in collaboration provided the candidate is the principal investigator of such studies (or he or she shall be required to state the extent of his or her own contribution). Provided the candidate has not less than 30% of single or lead author in the portfolio.

It should also be noted that candidates will not be allowed to submit as a thesis, studies or works for which a degree or qualification has already been awarded to the candidate by any University or other professional qualification awarding institution or body. Presentation shall be required to meet all the requirements specified in Ph. D.

Award regulations of the University of Ilorin Postgraduate School. Where there are future or subsequent publications from a successful thesis submitted to the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, it must be stated in such publication that the study was part of a dissertation or thesis submitted for the award of M. D. of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin.

Approval and Registration of Title of Thesis, Examination of Thesis Panel of Examiners, Oral Examination and Administration of the Examination: As approved by the postgraduate school of University of Ilorin.

Readmission: A candidate who has failed as listed in *1 and *2 above may be readmitted for an M.

  • degree provided he or she submits a completely different topic. This must be a topic which is not related to the previous topic that he or she failed. This will be accepted after one year from the date of his or her *1 or *2, that is the last oral examination of the failed thesis.
