B.                 Introduction

The programme is designed to provide training for those interested in the academic profession, serving officers in government, industry and commerce. It equally enhances candidates‘ skill in basic and applied research in Accounting that prepares them for further training in Accounting, Finance and other related Management fields.

C.                 Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is designed for the development of highly skilled and globally competitive manpower for the Nigeria private and public sectors, and the world at large; it is also towards the development of human resources suitable for teaching and conducting research in higher institutions of learning within and outside Nigeria.

D.                   Aim and Objectives

The aim of this programme is to produce manpower grounded in research and accounting practice for the private and public sectors.

Objectives:

  1. inculcating the requisite intellectual/conceptual foundations that will permit meaningful participation in the discussion or resolution of the problems which confront the accounting discipline in the contemporary world,
  2. encouraging research into problems which impede the maximum contribution of accounting to national development and well-being of the people;
  3. broadening and deepen the intellectual exposure of students in core accounting areas so as to develop their capability to undertake in-depth postgraduate research in any of the core areas of the discipline; and
  4. developing critical thinking skills in logical reasoning and critical analysis and improve the capacity of students in formulating sound accounting policies and strategies.

E.                   Admission Requirements

The candidates are required to possess the following:

  1. Five ‗O‘ Level Credits passes or their equivalent subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and two other Social Sciences subjects.
  2. Bachelor degree with at least Second Class Lower Division in Accounting or Finance from University of Ilorin or Bachelor degree with at least Second Class Lower Division in Accounting from any other recognised university.
  3. Bachelor degree with at least Second Class Lower Division in other related areas such as Economics, Business Administration/Management from University of Ilorin or Banking and/or Finance, Economics, Business Administration/Management from any other recognised universities with relevant Accounting professional qualifications (ACA, ACCA, CPA and ANAN).
  4. Minimum score of 55 percent (55%) in a qualifying examination conducted by the Department of Accounting; except graduates of University of Ilorin who obtained First Class or Second Class Upper Division who shall only appear before an interview panel set up by the Department and score a minimum of 55 percent (55%).

F.                   Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 18 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.

ii          The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months.

ACC 801   Financial Accounting Theory 2 Credits

Review of basic accounting procedures. Elements of the history of accounting. Interpretations of financial statements. Generally accepted accounting principles: net income concepts, valuation of stock, work-in-progress. Theory and techniques relating to financial position: cash, debtors, stock, investments, tangible and intangible non-current assets, liabilities and reserves. ACC 802   Accounting Standards 2 Credits

Major accounting standard bodies of the world: history, operations, structures, functions, and standards issued. Financial reporting council (Nigeria). Financial accounting standard board (FASB-USA). Accounting standard board (ASB-UK). International standard accounting board (IASB). 30h (T); E

ACC 803   Management Accounting Theory 2 Credits

Nature. Scope and purpose of costing. Theory of costing. Elements of cost: material, labour and over-head. Cost ascertainment. Cost allocation. Cost apportionment. Costing methods. Costing techniques: marginal costing, absorption costing. Cost/volume/profit analysis: break even analysis. Standard costing: mix and yield variances. ACC 804   International Accounting 2 Credits

Course is designed for students interested in accounting and financial control of international operations: preparation, translation, and analysis of financial statements of companies that have branches of foreign multinational companies. 30h (T); C

ACC 805   Auditing Theory 2 Credits

Advanced principles in external and internal auditing practices and techniques. Principles and practices of internal control: auditor‘s report, auditor‘s liabilities, audit risk, audit programme, auditing standards, professional ethics. Audit planning and control. ACC 806   Public Sector Accounting 2 Credits

Basic accounting for non-profit organisation. Basic characteristics of government accounting. Structure of governmental accounting in Nigeria: treasury, audit department, consolidated revenue fund, capital and development fund. Planning, programming and budgeting system (PPBS). 30h (T); C

ACC 807   Management Information System (MIS) 2 Credits

Electronic data processing (EDP) system in producing financial and management information. Feasibility studies. System analysis. System design and system implementation for computerised accounting system. Computer programming using either COBOL or FORTRAN. Data processing: manual and mechanised systems. System analysis and design. Information and communication technology, and its application in business finance and management. 30h (T); C

ACC 808   Investigative and Forensic Accounting 2 Credits

Nature of economic crime. Financial statement fraud. Corporate and white-collar crime. Litigation services. Opinion/expert witnessing. Economic damages calculations. Post acquisition disputes. Business valuation. Recovery: money laundering. Other specific areas of forensic applications. 30h (T); E

Principles, practice and theory of the Nigerian system of income tax, surtax, corporation tax and capital gains tax. Computation and assessments in relation to individuals, partnerships and limited companies. Procedures and practice relative to claims and appeals. Up and down streams of oil activities in Nigeria. Royalties. Petroleum task and financial control activities in the oil and gas industry. Financial statements in the oil and gas sector. Environmental issues. 30h (T); E

Computer. History. System design and analysis. Data network. File structure and file organisation. Principles of data design. Data manipulation and administration. ACC 812   Seminar 2 Credits

Each student is to present a seminar to the department at a session where internal examiners and at least an external examiner will evaluate and grade the candidate. Students are expected to give attention to contemporary issues in the selection of topics. 90h (P); C

ACC 813   Research Methodology 2 Credits

Domain of scientific research. Research design and strategy of sampling. Activities of research department. Model construction. Data-collecting strategies: questionnaire, interview, observation, focus group. Motivation research. Market research. Measurement: scaling, validity and reliability. ACC 815   Introduction to Applied Econometrics 2 Credits

General introduction. Introduction to classical linear regression model. Interpreting regression results. Violations of CLRM Assumptions. Tests and remedies for: heteroscedasticity, multicollinearity, autocorrelation and specification errors. Qualitative linear regression. Binary logit/probit and multinomial logit/probit. ACC 899   Dissertation 6 Credits

Each student under the guidance of a supervisor approved by the department is required to conduct, present, and submit the research report to the department. Report shall be duly assessed by a panel of 4 examiners and an external examiner. 270h (P); C

Graduation Requirements

Candidates must have taken and passed 30 Credits of Core and 6 Credits of Elective courses with a score of not less than 50%. Candidates must also have presented and defended one seminar paper to the satisfaction of a panel of internal examiners. The final dissertation must have been assessed and found satisfactory for the award of M. Sc. degree by a panel of four (4) including an external examiner.
