B. Introduction

The programme is designed to and expand graduate students‘ general appreciation of the significance of Yoruba language in the life of its speakers in Nigeria, Africa and the Diaspora through teaching and research in higher educational and research institutions.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is hinged on the need for integrating students‘ oral and written competence and performance with their analytical skills in the language enterprise.

D. Aim and Objectives

The programme aims to promote the study of Yoruba Language and documentation of Yoruba culture and objectives are to:

1. develop highly competent, versatile and effective users of Yoruba language;
2. further equip students with research and analytical skills to enable them pursue higher study in Yoruba;
3. enable students to be well informed and be conscious and aware of the linguistic diversity and the richness of Nigerian languages and other languages in the African continent; and
4. enable students to appreciate various Yoruba literary genres and be aware of richness of Yoruba and African literature.

E Admission Requirements

1. Candidates must possess a good Master degree in Yoruba from a recognized university, with a CGPA not below 3.5 on a five-point scale.
2. Candidates who did not make up to 3.5 standing will be required to register for the M.Phil. programme. Such candidates must present two seminars and an M.Phil. protocol for grading and must score a sixty percent 60% score before he could proceed to the Ph.D. otherwise the M.Phil. Degree would be awarded upon the submission of M.Phil. thesis. This thesis will be examined following the procedure for examining a M.Phil. thesis.
3. Students who are found to be eligible for admission into M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes but are in need of additional information in an area of specialization that may be useful for their theses will be required to audit some M.A. courses as prerequisite. These courses will be determined by the

Departmental Postgraduate Committee.

F Duration of The Programme

1. The Full-time M.Phil./Ph.D. programme would run for a minimum 36 months, and a maximum of 48 months.
2. The Part-time M.Phil./Ph.D. programme would run for 48 months and a maximum of 60 months.
3. The Full-time M.Phil. programme would run for a minimum of 12 months, and a maximum of 18 months, while the Part-time M.Phil programme would run for a minimum of 18 months and a maximum of 24 months.

G Detailed Course Description

LIY 881 M.Phil. Protocol 6 Credits

M. Phil. candidates and those who are registered for M.Phil./ Ph.D programme will prepare a protocol for their dissertation, the protocol which will be on a topic in Yoruba language should include normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to budget and plan of implementation, the protocol shall be evaluated for possible upgrading to Ph.D. or to be completed as M. Phil Dissertation. 270h (P); C

LIY 897 M. Phil. Dissertation 12 Credit

An original dissertation written on an area of Yoruba Language shall be written by the M.Phil. candidates.

The topic shall be approved by the Postgraduate School on the recommendation of the department through the faculty. The dissertation must make original contributions in the area of specialization to knowledge. 540h (P); C

LIY 901 Ph.D. Protocol 6 Credits

A protocol on a topic in Yoruba Language shall be prepared by Ph.D. candidates. It includes normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to literature review, budget, implementation plan and other aspects required in Postgraduate School guidelines. The protocol shall be examined by the Department and recommended to Postgraduate School for approval through Faculty Board of Postgraduate Studies. 270h (P); C

LIY 997 Ph.D. Thesis 21Credits

An original thesis written on the area of specialization. The topic which shall be approved by the Postgraduate School on the recommendation of the Department through the Faculty must make original contribution in the area of specialization to knowledge. 945h (P); C

H Graduation Requirements

Every M.Phil./Ph.D. candidate must submit a thesis on a chosen and approved topic, supervised by a member of staff whose qualification is not below the Ph.D., and who is not lower than Senior Lecturer in rank. M.Phil. dissertation and Ph.D. thesis will be defended before an external examiner duly nominated for that purpose and appointed by Senate through the University Postgraduate Board.
