B. Introduction

The Master of Philosophy (M.Phil/Ph.D.) in Sociology of Education programme is designed for degree holders who have 55% to 59% or its equivalent in their Master of Education (M. Ed.) Programme. The M.Phil.in Sociology of Education is a combined Programme of taught modules and research, which allows students to gain valuable knowledge in education while investigating their own interests.

C.  Philosophy

The programme trains individuals with advanced education and research skills in the teaching and learning of in Sociology of Education. It also prepares the next generation of Sociology of Education in advanced knowledge, skills and research. Individuals are appropriately grounded in Sociology of Education

D.  Aim and Objectives

The programmes aimed at providing opportunities for individuals wanting to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Sociology of Education but scored less than 60% or its equivalent in their Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree programme. The objectives are to equip the students to be able to:

  1. impart a thorough understanding of research methods;
  2. provide students with the opportunity to undertake original research and scholarship in sociology of education , both independently and in collaboration with their lecturers for publications and presentations;
  1. equip students with the basic knowledge, values and skills that they can use to enable their institution to effectively respond to the challenges of education in today‘s society;
  2. demonstrate the ability to think sociologically and to apply sociological principles and research methods;
  3. analyze educational problems and issues by using concepts in and knowledge and research methods of Sociologybecoming more grounded in their understanding of the goals of education in Nigeria within the context of the global communitybecoming familiar with theoretical and practical issues in Sociology of Educationapplying the knowledge of the field for the purpose of solving existing problemsbuild the capacity for critical thinking, creativity and innovation
  4. acquiring competences to function at the in highest level of manpower needs in the field.

E. Admission requirements

The candidates are required to obtain the following:

  1. ―O‖ Level credits or equivalent in five subjects including Mathematics and English Language;
  2. Completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Education degree (B. Ed); B. A. (Ed), B. Sc (Ed), with an Master‘s degree in Education (M.Ed) and M.Sc (Ed) from the University of Ilorin or equivalent degrees as approved by the Senate or its representatives; and
  3. Scores of 55% to 59.9% or equivalents in the Master degree programme in Education from the University of Ilorin or equivalent degrees as approved by the Senate.

F.  Duration and Mode of study

  1. The duration of the course is between 12 Months to 18 Months for full-time course .
  2. Students should offer courses amounting to a minimum of 15 Credits and a maximum of 17 Credits including Seminar and Project.
  3. Students shall present and defend a dissertation proposal (protocol) not later than 3 Months after the first registration of title of not more than 300 words in their
  4. respective departments.
  5. Dissertation should not exceed 45,000 words.The dissertation should pass through the Postgraduate School Board, 1 Month before the final Examination.
  6. The Students must have at least an average score of 60% before proceeding to Ph.D.

HPE 801    Foundations of Nigerian Education   2 Credits

A survey of the traditional, historical, political and social foundations of Nigerian Education. Critical assessment of the contribution of the various educational traditions and agencies of educational development in colonial and independent Nigeria. 30h (T);C

RME 801   Research Methods in Education  3 Credits

Types of research, method and data. Types of instruments. Types of procedures for data collection. Methods of data analysis. Application of computer in data analysis. Presentation of results and conclusions. 45h (T);C

RME 803   Statistical Methods in Educational Research    2 Credits

Review of Basic Statistical Concepts; descriptive, parametric. Inferential and nonparametric statistics; t-statistic, ANOVA, ANCOVA, Regression Analysis, Chi-square and Statistical techniques for post-hot analysis. Application of computer in statistical analysis. Meaning and results of statistical analysis. 30h(T);C

RME 805        Educational Measurement and Test Construction  3 Credits

Measurement, scale and scaling models. Theory of measurement error. Test construction procedures; item writing, analysis and assembly in achievement, aptitude and non-cognitive tests. Reliability and validity of tests. Practical work in test construction. 45h (T);E

The classroom as a social system. Social interaction and learning of norms, roles. Roles and Responsibilities of school personnel. Roles of a Teacher in the school and classroom and factors that influences a teacher‘s role performance. Concept of Sociological Theory: Functionalism, conflicts, symbolic interaction, lebbeling, exchange). Various Sociological Theories (Identification of Theorists, Conditions for propounding the theories, Explanation of the theories). Application of sociological theories to education. SOE 803    Education and Social Development   2 Credits

A study of the relationship between education and social, economic and political development. The impact of social change on education and education as a factor in social change. Global perspective on education and social development. Comparative analysis of aims of education in other countries (developed and developing). Education, Certification and Development (Deschooling Society, Banking concept of education as an instrument of oppressor). SOE 804   Sociology of Childhood and Adolescence   2 Credits Socialization process, educational implications of social class influences on childhood and adolescence. Sociological concept of childhood and adolescence. Influence of Socializing Agents on child development. SOE 805    Educational Opportunity and Social Stratification  3 Credits

An examination of inequality of educational opportunity in relation to status, power, mobility and social differentiation. Student‘s educational and occupational aspirations. Influence of social stratification and on students behaviour. Educational life chances of who gets what: labeling theory and life chances, gender, social class, special needs education). A survey of major research works on small groups and interpersonal relationships. Concept, principles and types of group dynamics. Robert K. Merton‘s contribution to group dynamics. A survey of current social problems in Nigeria, e.g. changing sex roles and values, population explosion, materialism and indiscipline; ICT in education; Cultism; Politics in education; Religious issues in education; Unemployment ;Indiscipline; Child labour; Child trafficking; Ethnicity and education; Poverty / economic recession; Social media and education; Tribalism; Kidnapping; Insurgency; Corruption their effects in schools. 30h (T); C

SOE 808    Graduate Seminar in Sociology of Education   2 Credits

Study and discussion of selected topics; preparation and presentation of individual (or group reports) in the approaches area of specialization in Social Studies Education. The course shall be examined by means of a term paper(s).30h (P);C

SOE 839    Research Dissertation  6 Credits Selection and completion of a dissertation in an appropriate area of specialization in Sociology of Education under the guidance of a supervisor and presentation of the project report.90h (T); C

  • Graduation Requirements

The condition for the award of M.Phil.degree in the Department of Social Sciences Education shall include:

  1. Candidate may be required to take and pass a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 17 credits taken from an approved relevant combination of Master of Education courses and the prescribed M. Phil. courses which include seminar and research protocol.
  2. Candidates shall prepare and defend a research topic (protocol) subject to approval by an academic panel which consist the Head of the Department, candidate‘s supervisor and other relevant lecturers. The protocol shall be presented within the first three months of candidate‘s first registration.
  3. Candidate shall prepare and present a seminar on a research proposal (dissertation proposal) approved by the academic panel on a topic which shall embody his original dissertation.
  4. A minimum of 60% Cumulative Average Score must be achieved before a candidate shall be permitted to proceed with the Ph. D. Degree in the Department.
