Introduction
This programme is designed to reflect trans-disciplinary approach in line with current research practices in the world. It is targeted at enhancing the ability of students on the programme to conduct theoretically and methodologically grounded research in any area of political science. The programme is directed at building the needed expertise for academic teaching, research, advocacy and consultancy.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the programme seeks offering class teaching and research-oriented training in the field of political science for interested candidates from within and outside Nigeria. It is geared towards meeting the increasing demands for trained manpower that are grounded in theoretical and practical approach in teaching, and research on contemporary socio-economic and political issues especially as it affects Nigeria.
Aim and Objectives
The aim of the programme is to deliver theoretically and methodologically grounded researched awarding (M.Phil. and M.Phil./Ph.D.) degree programme in political science in an atmosphere that enhances independent thinking among the students.
Producing graduate students that can conduct and produce theoretically and methodologically oriented research in the area of political science of their choice; and
Being among the leading department of political science in Nigeria with diverse knowledge in different areas of specialization within the discipline in other to serve the society better.
Admission Requirements
For a candidate to be eligible for admission into the M.Phil. degree programme in political science, he/she is expected to fulfil the following conditions:
Candidates must have a minimum of Five O’Level Credits in English Language, Government, Economics and any other two subjects with at least a pass in Mathematics in WAEC or its equivalent
Hold a B.Sc. degree in political science from a recognized university with a minimum of Second Class Honours Lower Division.
Hold a M.Sc degree in Political Science with an aggregate score between the range of 55% to 59% or (3.5-3.99 CGPA)
Duration of the programme
The full time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months.
Detailed Course Description
POS 881 Research Seminar in Political Science 3 Credits Students are to prepare, present and submit a seminar paper on an approved topic in their area of research interest.135h(P);C
POS 882 Advanced Research Seminar in Political Science 3 Credits Students are to prepare a research protocol on a topic approved by the department postgraduate committee. Research protocol is expected to be publicly presented and defended by the students before a panel of examiners.135h(P);C
POS 883 Advanced Research Seminar in Political Science 3 Credits Students are to prepare, publicly present, defend and submit a research seminar that highlights findings from field study conducted by the students before a panel of examiners.135h(P);C
POS899 Dissertation 6Credits
Students that fall short of requirements for conversion to Ph.D. programme are expected to prepare, present, defend and submit a dissertation for a terminal M.Phil. degree. Dissertation is to be publicly presented before a panel of examiners.270h(P);C
Graduation Requirements
The programme is designed to be a full research programme. However, students are to present research seminars as part of the requirements for their conversion to the Ph.D. programme or graduation with an M.Phil. degree by passing a 15 credits.
