B. Introduction

The programme is to offer unique opportunity for candidates on successful completion, to convert to the Ph.D. degree programme. The programme may however terminate with M.Phil. degree as the case may be and, the programme is only by research. Candidates may be expected to audit certain courses at the Master degree level by the department.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is for enhancement of professional and research skills of students as it concentrates on expanding their knowledge base and bridging identified deficiencies.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is the improvement of the practical and research competencies of students in their areas of research interest, thus facilitating their progression to Ph.D. degree programme should they so desire.

Objectives:

  1. bridging students‘ knowledge and proficiency gaps in the theoretical underpinnings of their areas of specialisation;
  2. improving the competency of the students in research problem identification, hypothesis development, conceptualization of solution, experimental design/methodologies; and
  3. Providing opportunities for progression of deserving M.Phil. graduates to the Ph.D. degree programme in Physiology.

E. Admission Requirements

Candidates are required to have:

  1. O‘ level Credits passes or their equivalents in five subjects, which include Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English Language.
  2. A first degree in Physiology with a minimum of a Second Class Lower Division.
  3. MB;BS, B.DS, DVM, BNS, B.Physiotherapy, OD or other unclassified honours degrees in relevant specialties from recognized universities are also eligible.
  4. A weighted average score of between 55% and 59% on completion of the M.Sc. programme.

F. Duration of the Programme

The programme shall be for 2 semesters for students eligible to convert to the Ph.D. programme.

G. Detailed Course Description

PHS 899 Dissertation 6 Credits

Research on the candidate‘s area of interest presented in a dissertation examined orally before Panel of Examiners. 270h (P); C

  • Graduation Requirements

The programme is primarily by research work. A student is expected to convert to Ph.D. after satisfying necessary requirements following seminar presentations of his/her research work. For the award of the degree, a candidate must have audited the prescribed courses, and submitted a research dissertation. The provisions of the Postgraduate School shall apply in

the assessment of the research protocol and oral examination of the dissertation for the award of M. Phil. degree and conversion to Ph.D. degree programme.
