B. Introduction

The programme is toprovidemainstreamtraining in PeaceStudies at Master of Philosophy and Doctoral level (Ph.D.) in Nigeria and the West African sub-region. The CPSS realises the need to have capable hands to serve humanity as scholars and practitioners in the fields of Conflict Management and Peace-building, Peace and Development Journalism, Peace and Environmental Studies as well as Security and Strategic Studies. The Centre immerses these areas in a carefully designed transdisciplinary programme towards envisioning and evolving a new world order that is cosmopolitan with non-violent values and conflict management skills.

C. Philosophy

The programme is founded on the need to train students at the Master of Philosophy and Doctoral degree level during which the candidate would engage in a one year period of independent research thereby grooming students to be competent researchers and Sound doctoral graduates.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to make the University of IIorin a global Centre of Excellence in Peace, Security, Development Studies as well as Development research and Documentation. The objectives of the programme are to:

1. enroll students who would be involved in MPhil/Ph.D. research work to be supervised by competent academics in the University of Ilorin;
2. ensure that students are well involved in basic academic requirements of the doctoral degree programme; and,
3. conduct a thorough, independent, well-supervised research work in the relevant areas of peace and development studies.

A. Admission Requirements

1. Any five Credits including English and Mathematics in humanities and Sciences, Arts, and Social Sciences ii. The MPhil/Ph.D. degree programme in Peace and Development Studies is open to candidates with an M.A degree and with a minimum weighted average Score of 56-59% obtained in Peace and Development Studies or Peace and Conflict Studies or Peace and Strategic Studies. .

B. Duration of the Programme

Full Time: The duration of the MPhil/Ph.D. full time programme is 12 calendar months (or one year) and a maximum of 54 .

For each of the mode, candidates are expected to conduct an independent research under the supervision of an assigned academic staff in the Centre or from other relevant Department in the University.

C. Detailed Course Description

PDS 901:    Ph.D. Protocol 5 Credits

Each MPhil/Ph.D. candidate is required to prepare and present a protocol on a relevant topic in Peace and Development Studies. The protocol should include the introduction, literature review and theoretical framework, methodology, budget and time plan. 270 h (P); C

PDS 903: Advanced Research Methods 6 Credits

Science, Society and Social Research (Basic Research Philosophies); The Research Cycle (inductive and deductive reasoning); Types of Research in Peace Studies; Conceptualization and Measurement; Sampling Procedure; Causation and Research Design; Qualitative Research Methods – Participant/Non-Participant Observation, In-depth Interview, Focus Group Discussion, Ethnography, Case Studies, Content Analysis, Historical and Comparative Research; Quantitative Research Methods – Survey, Experiment, Percentages, ChiSquare Method, etc; Secondary Data Sources; Fundamental Hints for Preparing Research Proposal; Conducting Fieldwork and Writing Research Report, Conflict and Security Research; Ethical issues in Peace Research. 270 h (T); C
