B. Introduction.

The programme is to give room for those that do not have Ph.D. grade in the M.Sc. We offer quality teaching and supervision in various aspects of pure and applied Mathematics such as Algebra, Complex Analysis, Functional Analysis, Inequalities, Analytical Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Optimisation, Numerical Analysis and Modelling.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to focus on training graduates who are well-equipped in their area of specialisation and all facets of Mathematics with the main purpose of meeting our national and global needs in the area of technological advancement. The department offers some courses that meet the needs of some other departments.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to train students to attain academic excellence and competence in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving through the use of logics and computational skills, and courses are designed to cover the most basic aspects of pure and applied mathematics with equal balance.

Objectives:

  1. training students to be self-reliant in their chosen field of Mathematics;
  2. producing students who are adequately prepared for further research work;
  3. producing mathematicians who can readily impart their knowledge to students at higher levels of education;
  4. developing in students self- confidence in handling problems with minimal or no supervision;
  5. training students to develop confidence in appreciating and solving problems in general; vi. producing students with good educational foundation for a range of career in public services, industries and commerce; and
  6. producing mathematicians that can be self-employed.

E. Admission Requirements

Candidates seeking admission to the M.Phil./Ph.D. Mathematics programme are required to have:

  1. ‗O‘ Level Credits passes or their equivalents in five subjects including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, and any other relevant subject.
  2. Master of Science degree in Mathematics of the University of Ilorin or any other approved university with a score of at least 3.00 CGPA or 55% can be admitted for Degree in Mathematics.

F. Duration of Programme

The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 12 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.

G. Detailed Course Description

MAT 899 Dissertation 10 Credits

H. Graduation Requirements

Candidates could be converted to Doctor of Philosophy programme provided that they score a minimum of 60% in the conversion examination after a 12 month studentship. Otherwise, a Master of Philosophy degree in Mathematics will be awarded after successful defence of the dissertation of the original research work carried by the student.
