B. Introduction

The programme is to expose students to studies in Literature-in-English at a higher level. Its contents are designed to assist students to acquire the necessary competencies for higher analytic thinking and also help the students to make more efficient judgments, and develop more holistically as individuals to enable them to contribute more meaningfully to the development of society.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is designed to bridge the gap between the expected level of competence and the student‘s academic performance; most especially with respect to the proposed aspects of literature and literary studies and specialisation at the Ph.D. level.

D. Aim and Objectives

The programme aims to develop the academic competence of students to an appreciable level for optimal performance in both oral and written tasks.

The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. Develop highly competent, versatile, and dynamic critics of literary products;
  2. Develop the student‘s latent creative potential with respect to literary outputs and nurture it to a more professional level;
  3. Equip students with research and analytical skills to enable them to engage in higher critical argument;
  4. Enable students to be well informed and conscious of the literary diversity and proliferation in the Nigerian socio-cultural milieu; and
  5. Equip students with the intuitive knowledge which would enable them to function more professionally in the field of literature and literary studies.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. All candidates must possess a minimum of five O‘ Level Credits subjects including English Language and Literature-in-English.
  2. Candidates must possess a good Master’s degree in English Lanuage from a recognised university, with a CGPA not below 3.5 on a 5.0 scale or a cumulative average of 55%.
  3. Such candidate so admitted must present two seminars including an M.Phil. protocol for grading and must earn an average of 60% score before he/she can proceed to the Ph.D. otherwise the M.Phil. degree would be awarded upon the submission of the M.Phil. dissertation. This thesis will be examined following the procedure for an M.Phil. dissertation.
  4. Students who are found to be eligible for admission into M.Phil./Ph.D. programme but need additional information in an area of specialisation that may be useful for their theses will be required to audit some M.A. courses as a prerequisite. These courses will be determined by the Departmental Postgraduate Committee.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 12 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months.

G. Detailed Course Description

ENG 882 M. Phil. Protocol (Language and Literature) 10 Credits

M.Phil. candidates and those who are registered for M.Phil./Ph.D. programme will prepare a protocol for their dissertation. Protocol which will be on a topic focusing on any genre of literature or in the area of literary theory and criticism: normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to budget and plan of implementation. The protocol shall be evaluated for possible upgrading to Ph.D. or to be completed as M.Phil dissertation. 450h (P); C

ENG 886    Research Seminar (Literature) 8 Credits

An original seminar paper written in any area of literature and literary studies shall be written by the M.Phil. candidates. The topic shall be approved by the committee of the department on the recommendation of the department project supervisor. The paper must be presented orally and graded accordingly at the departmental postgraduate seminar series. 360h (P); C

H. Graduation Requirements

Candidates who do not make up to 4.00 or an average of 60% will be required to register for the M.Phil/Ph.D. programme. Such candidates must present two seminars and a research proposal for grading and must score a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or an average of 60% before proceeding to the Ph.D level, otherwise, the M.Phil degree should be awarded upon the submission of a thesis. This thesis should be examined following the procedure of a Ph.D. thesis.
