B. Introduction

The programme is designed to extend and expand graduate students‘ general appreciation of the significance of language in human life, through research. This is to enhance not only their oral and written competence and performance but also their analytical skills in the literary explorations.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to make tangible contributions to Arabic Language and literature, be consciousness of most advanced studies on the subject and being in the vanguard of reference in international study of the subject.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to develop highly competent, versatile and effective users of Arabic language and literature. The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. equipping students with research and analytical skills in their high studies in Arabic Language and literature;
  2. exposing students to advanced knowledge of Arabic Literature sub-division such as: language in areas such as: poetry, prose, (novel, short stories, art as speech making) and play; and
  3. making students more aware of the literacy diversity and profundity of Arabic.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. All candidates must pass the minimum of five O‘ Level Credit subjects (including English and Arabic) of WAEC/NECO/Senior Arabic & Islamic Studies Certificate, N. C. E. or Diploma from a recognized University as special consideration (waiver)
  2. All candidates must possess a B. A. degree in Arabic, or Arabic/Education at least a Second Class Lower Division from a recognized university, Mastery of additional African Language will be of advantage.
  3. A. Combined Honours in Arabic and another subject in at a Second Class Lower Division
  4. Bachelor‘s Degree in related courses such as Islamic Studies, Islamic Law with evidence of in- depth knowledge of Arabic All candidates shall be subjected to a selection process.
  5. The candidate must have M. A. degree with 3. 00 CGPA or 55% The Candidate

F. Duration of the Programme

Full-time: maximum of 12 months.

G. Detailed Course Description

ALI 881 M.Phil. Protocol 10 Credits

A protocol for dissertation, on a topic in Arabic language or linguistics should include normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to budget and plan of implementation Protocol shall be evaluated for possible upgrading to Ph.D. or to be completed as M.Phil. dissertation. 450h (P); C

ALI 882 Research Seminar 8 Credits

Original seminar paper written on any area of Arabic Language or applied linguistics shall be written by the M.Phil. candidates. Topic shall be approved by the committee of the department on the

recommendation of the department project supervisor. Paper must be presented orally and graded accordingly at the departmental postgraduate seminar series. 360h (P); C

H. Graduation Requirements

Candidate who do not make up to 3,5 or average of 60% will be required to register for M.Phil/Ph.D. programmeSuch candidates must present two seminars and a research proposal for grading and must score a minimum CGPA of 3.5.00 or average of 60% be proceeding to the Ph.D. otherwise the M.Phil. degree should be awarded upon the submission of a thesis. This thesis should be examined following the procedure of a Ph.D. thesis.
