B. Introduction

The programme was introduced in the Department of Religions to meet the needed manpower in the areas of specialisation. The programme is designed to enhance academic research work in the area and to assist the students to get admission for their Ph.D. programme. Subsequently, the programme has helped many students in the field of Islamic Studies to get jobs in tertiary institutions

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to develop the intellectual capacity and uplift the moral standard of students in Islamic Studies, towards equipping them with effective capacity to uphold the teachings of Islam and to foster understanding and analysis of Religious sensitivities in Nigeria.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to enable candidates demonstrate research capabilities and develop sound intellectual engagements in the fields of Islamic Studies.

Objectives:

  1. produce students with knowledge in Islamic Studies including working knowledge of Arabic language;
  2. training students in Islamic history, its growth and development and to expose students to the relevance of Islam to Nigeria, West Africa and the rest of the world.
  3. introducing a basis for sound interreligious understanding through exposure of students to courses in the other two religions relevant to Nigeria i.e. Christian and African Traditional Religion; and
  4. preparing the students for Ph.D. programme in Islamic Studies.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. Five Credit passes in SSC/GCE O/Level or its equivalent subjects including English Language and Islamic Studies.
  2. Relevant Bachelor degree not lower than Second Class (Lower Division) from recognised universities.
  3. Diploma in Arabic and Islamic Studies/NCE in Islamic Studies and other relevant courses.
  4. The candidate must have between3.5 CGGPA or 60% overall in M.A. Islamic Studies.
  5. The candidate must have M.Phil in Comparative Religious Studies if below 3.5 CGPA of 60%.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 6 calendar months and a maximum of 12 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 12 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months

G. Detailed Course Description

RIS 881    M.Phil. Protocol 6 Credits

M.Phil. candidates and those who are registered for M.Phil./Ph.D. programme will prepare a protocol for their dissertation. Protocol which will be on a topic in Islamic studies: normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to a budget and plan of implementation. Protocol shall be assessed for possible upgrading to Ph.D. or to be completed as M.Phil. Dissertation. 270h (P); C

RIS 897    Dissertation 12 Credit

Original dissertation in the area of Islamic studies shall be written by the M.Phil. Candidates. Topic shall be approved by the postgraduate school on the recommendation of the department through the faculty. Dissertation must make original contributions in the area of specialisation to Knowledge. 540h (P); C

H. Graduation Requirements

  • Every M. Phil. Candidate is required to present one protocol and seminar paper in his area of specialisation;

  • Candidate must score not less than 60% in each of the presentations before conversion to Ph.D. programme.
