B. Introduction

The programme is for advancement of research and analytical skill in the context of Islamic ethics and values. The knowledge so acquired should substantially enhance their prospects of gaining employment in various capacities such as academics, professional and other area of work where the ability to apply and advise upon Islamic legal issues is significant.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is for the enhancement of research and professional skills in Islamic laws and ability to function effectively and competitively in academics locally and globally.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to simulate excellent research and writing skills based on stronger foundation and better understanding of the role of Islamic law in a contemporary context. The objectives include:

  1. Producing graduates of distinction committed to lifelong learning, integrity and professionalism capable of being responsible leaders and communicators in their respective fields.
  2. Displaying the ability to deal with different types of legal system and laws
  3. Developing the ability to analyse, articulate and write on Islamic legal issues, by linking previous and current experiences with an academic inquiry, particularly via the dissertation.

E. Admission Requirements

The candidates are required to possess the following:

  1. O‘Level Credit or its equivalent in five subjects including English Language, Mathematicsand Islamic Religious Studies or Arabic Language.
  2. A first degree in Islamic Law, Common and Islamic Law or equivalent from a recognised university with at least a Second Class (Lower Division) Honours.
  3. Candidate with Master Degree in Islamic Law from a recognised university with at least 55% or CGPA or its equivalent in the final LL.M degree examination. Such prospective candidates must have a working knowledge of Arabic language and are required to satisfy the faculty Postgraduate Board at a placement screening exercise.

F. Duration of the Programme

The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 18 calendar months and maximum of 24 calendar months. This programme is full time study only.

G. Detailed Course Duration

Law 823 Legal Research Methodology 2 Credits

Principles, Methods and approaches to legal research. Selection of research topics. Research design in legal methodology and research method. Finding materials in thelibrary. Stages of legal research. Using social methods. Referencing. FormattingEthical issues in Legal research. Tips on dissertation/project. Defence/viva voice. 30h (T); C

Law 824 Seminar 2 Credit

Each student under the guidance of an approved supervisor by the faculty postgraduate board is required to present 2 seminars. 30h (T); C

Law 899   Dissertation 2 Credits

Each student under the guidance of an approved supervisor is required toconduct research in an area approved by faculty postgraduate board culminating in the submission of a research dissertation. 225h(T); C

Note:

In addition, candidates who have not taken the following LL. MCourses ISL 801, 802, 803 and 804 or their equivalent at LL.M level must take them as additional pre-requisites for graduation.

H. Graduation Requirements

For the conversion from M.Phil./Ph.D in Islamic Law to Ph.D. degree programme, the candidate must have passed/audited the prescribed courses and submitted and defend research protocol and conversion seminar. The position of Postgraduate School shall apply in the assessment of the research protocol and oral examination of the seminar for conversion to Ph.D. degree programmes. The candidate must have a minimum of 60% in each of the two Seminars (Protocol Defence and Conversion Seminar)
