B. Introduction

The M.Phil. Physics programme consists of research in all the major disciplines of Physics. The programme is delivered by seminars and a research project. Lecturers from home and abroad are on ground and make significant contributions. We offer quality teaching and supervision in various aspects of theory and applications of Physics as follows: Atmospheric Physics, Communication Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Ionospheric Physics, Environmental Physics, Geophysics, Material Science, Meteorology, Radiation Physics, Semiconductor Physics, Solar Energy, Space Physics and Mathematics Physics

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is turning out graduates who are well-trained in all facets of Physics with the main purpose of meeting our national needs in the area of technological advancement.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the Master of Philosophy Programme in Physics is to train students to acquire academic excellence and competence in Physics Research to transit to doctoral programme. The objectives are to:

  1. produce students who are adequately prepared for further research;
  2. produce physicists who can readily impart their knowledge to students at higher levelsof education; and
  3. develop self-confident students who could work with minimal or no supervision

E. Admission Requirements

Candidates seeking admission to the M.Sc. Physics programme are required to have:

  1. ―O‖ Level credits or its equivalent in five subjects which include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, and any other relevant subject
  2. Master of Science Degree in Physics from the University of Ilorin or any other recognized University with scores between 55.0 and 59.9% or its equivalent in their final Master Degree Examination in Physics.

F. Duration of the programme

The Master of Philosophy in Physics programme shall be on Full-time for a minimum of 12 calendar months and a maximum of 24 months. A candidate may apply for an extension of not more than 12 calendar months, after the expiration of the maximum period.

G. Detailed Course Description

PHY 899 Dissertation 6 Credits

The Master of Philosophy Programme shall be by 100% Research work only. However, a student could be asked to take some relevant Master of Science Physics courses by his/her supervisor but such courses would not be graded. 270h (P); C

H. Graduation Requirements

Students on the Master of Philosophy Degree programme in Physics could be converted to Doctor of Philosophy Programme provided that they score a minimum of 60% in the conversion examination after a 12-month studentship, otherwise an M.Phil. Degree would be awarded at the end of the programme. The M. Phil. Degree is awarded on successful defence of a dissertation of an independent original research carried out by the student.
