B. Introduction

The M.Phil./Ph.D in Adult Education programme is designed for master‘s degree holders in adult education who had average of 55 to 59 percent in their Master of Education (M. Ed.) programme. The M.Phil./Ph.D in Adult Education is a combined programme of taught modules and research, which allows students to gain valuable knowledge in adult education while carrying out research in the area of interest.

C. Philosophy

Master of Philosophy in Adult Education equips graduates with critical thinking and problem solving skills for advanced academic and professional careers in adult education and the management of human capital for societal development in a fast and evolving global knowledge driven society.

D. Aim and Objectives

M.Phil./Ph.D in Adult Education with specialization in areas such as: Management and Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, Community Development, Gerontology and Social Services, Industrial Education and Training are designed to help graduates to be more relevant and effective in the education sector by:

  1. developing knowledgeable scholars who will provide professional practice within the context of the global community;
  2. becoming more familiar with theoretical and practical issues in adult education, especially in areas of specialization;
  3. developing competent researchers in the field for the purpose of addressing contemporary and emerging issues such as poverty, literacy, gender issues and skills acquisition;
  4. building capacity for critical thinking, creativity and innovation; and
  5. empowering scholars who can propel social change through acquiring competences to function at the highest level of manpower needs in the field within and outside the country.

E. Admission Requirements

The candidates are required to obtain the following:

  1. O‖ Level credits or equivalent in five subjects including Mathematics and English Language;
  2. Completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Education degree (B. Ed) in Adult Education;
  3. B. A. (Ed), B.Sc. (Ed), with a Master‘s degree in Education (M.Ed.) with specialization in adult education from the University of Ilorin or any other University or equivalent degrees as approved by the Senate or its representatives; and
  4. Scores of 55% to 59.9% or equivalents in the Master degree programme in Adult Education from the University of Ilorin or equivalent degrees as approved by the Senate.

F. Duration of Programme:

  1. The duration of the course is between 12 calendar months with an extension of not more than 6 months.
  2. Students should offer courses amounting to a minimum of 15 Credits and a maximum of 17 Credits including Seminar and Project.
  3. Students shall present and defend a dissertation proposal (Protocol) not later than 3 months after the first registration of title of not more than 300 words in their respective departments.
  4. Dissertation should not exceed 45,000 words.
  5. The dissertation should pass through the Postgraduate School Board one month before the final examination.

G. Detailed Course Description

RME 901  Advanced Research Methods in Education 3 Credits

The concept and nature of research, scientific processes in research, problem definition, variable identification, sources of research topics, theory construction and hypothesis formulation, techniques for literature review, principles of design, instrumentation, data collection, techniques for data analysis, and presentation of results. Candidates must be introduced to computers and data analysis, analytical software and techniques in educational research. The orientation must be practical throughout as candidates are guided to prepare tentative research proposals. They must be present and defend individually in class, techniques of research reporting, and research proposal writing. 45h (T); C

RME 902 Advanced Educational Statistics 3 Credits

Concept of educational statistics; the role of statistics in education, descriptive statistics and the various areas of application in education, classroom data, school records, school demography, social relations in school, school administration and finances, Inferential statistics, population and sample theory, non-parametric statics in education, hypothesis assumption, types, applications and limitations. The nature of parametric statistical models in education, application and limitations (correlation, univariate and multivariate analysis of education data), the nature of significant tests, problems of inferences. Candidates must be taught to utilize computer in various phases of this course and to be familiar with various analytical software. Emphasis must be placed on educational and practical application of basic statistical concepts in various educational disciplines. 45h (T); C

EDT 903  Information and Communication Technology 3 Credits

In-depth knowledge of skills and techniques of data processing in education. Overview of sources, storage, retrieval and dissemination of data/information. Programme design and management of data bank. General problem solving with the use of information technology. Hands-on experience should be emphasized. 45h (T); C

AES 906  Thesis Proposal Seminar I 3 Credits

Format for presenting thesis proposal. Types of research proposals. Meaning and types of data analysis in educational research. Presentation of data analysis and results in educational research. Research writing and presentation of thesis proposal. 45h (T); C

AES 998 Dissertation 6 Credits

Candidates are required to demonstrate research competences by selecting a thesis topic in their relevant areas of specialisation. The research is carried out by the individual under the guidance of a competent supervisor according to graduate school requirements. The candidate is expected to make some significant contributions to knowledge. The thesis is defended before an appropriately constituted examination committee chaired by the Head of Department. The External Examiner‘s verdict shall override all other decisions. 270h (P); C

  • Graduation Requirement

Students should offer the following courses including Seminar and Project: RME 901(3), RME 902(3), EDT 903(3), AES 906(3), AES 998(6)

In addition, M.Phil./Ph.D students are expected to do the following:

  1. Candidate may be required to take and pass a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 17 credits taken from an approved relevant combination of Master of Education courses and the prescribed M.Phil./Ph.D courses which include seminar and research protocol.
  2. Candidate shall prepare and defend a research topic (protocol) subject to approval by an academic panel which consist the Head of Department, candidate‘s supervisor and other relevant lecturers. The protocol shall be presented within the first three months of candidate‘s first registration.
  3. Candidate shall prepare and present a seminar on a research proposal (dissertation proposal) approved by the academic panel on a topic which shall embody his original dissertation.
  4. A minimum of 60% Cummulative Average Score must be achieved before a candidate shall be permitted to proceed with the Ph.D. Degree in the Department.
