A. Introduction
The department started offering postgraduate programme in Geology (M.Sc. and Ph.D) since 1987. The programme has since matured with time and today offer teaching and research supervisions in the following areas: Geochemistry, Sedimentology, Petroleum Geology, Palynology, Biostratigraphy, Engineering Geology, Solid Mineral Exploration, Hydrogeology and Mining Geology.
B. Philosophy
Philosophy of the M. Phil programme is anchored on developing research personnel who have the ability to apply advance techniques in Geology and Mineral Sciences to solve both theory and practical problems.
C. Aim and Objectives
The primary aim of the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) in Geology is to enable graduates of Master of Science degree in Geology with cumulative average percentage score between 55.00-59.90% to upgrade their knowledge and prepare for doctoral degree.
D. Admission Requirements
Candidates seeking admission into the programme must possess the Master of Science degree in Geology with a minimum cumulative average percentage score of 55.00%. Special consideration would be given to applicants with M.Sc. in Geology or related fields who have obtained an average score of 55.0% to 59.9% in the M.Sc. programme.
E. Duration of the Programme
The duration of Master of Philosophy in Geology shall be a minimum of twelve (12) calendar months for full-time students and twenty four to thirty six (24-36) calendar months for part-time students.
