Introduction
The programme is the study of the earth as the home of man. And is adjusting its scope and content to address the adverse consequences of such man-environment relations. The environment, which the geographer studies, has been an issue of great concern over the three decades.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the programme is the development of excellent skills and competences in preservation, conservation and sustainable management of the local, regional and nation environment through a commitment to values and ethics, quality and relevance.
Aim and Objectives
The aim of the programme is to train future Geographers and Environmentalists who possess competence in both theory and practice of environmental issues and are adequate in facing the challenges of the dynamic human and natural environment.
Objectives:
acquiring appropriate research skills and knowledge;
equipping with the skills and competences necessary to grapple with contemporary environmental challenges;
understanding the processes which transform the environment; and
conducting environmental impact assessment and understand the methods of addressing environmental issues.
Admission Requirements
The candidates are required to possess the following:
O‘ Level Credits or its equivalent in five subjects including English Language, Geography and any three from Arts/Social Science/Science and atleast a Pass in Mathematics.
Candidates must possess good Bachelor degree from a recognised university and must obtain a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in Geography, Environmental, Management, Urban and Regional Planning or other related disciplines.
Candidates who obtained a weighted score between 55% and 59% would be eligible for M.Phil./Ph.D. programme. However, candidates who obtained a weighted score between 50% and 54% shall be eligible to proceed to M.Phil. programme in Geography and Environmental Management.
Duration of the Programme
The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 12 calendar months after obtaining the Master degree.
Detailed Course Description
GPE881 Graduate Seminar 2Credit
Critical presentation and discussion of each student’s research topic with emphasis on literature review, methodology and highlights of the proposed research work.90h(P);C
GPE899 Dissertation 5Credits
Original research study carried out by the student with approval of the department and supervised by a member of staff.225h(P);C
Graduation Requirements
The curriculum consists of research work, course work, and seminars. To be awarded the M.Phil. degree in Geography and Environmental Management, a candidate must pass 16 Credits as follows:

Conversion from M.Phil./Ph.D. to Ph.D. Degree Programme
Candidate who obtained a weighted score above 60% would be eligible for conversion from M.Phil./Ph.D. to Ph.D. programme, and conversion will be considered after completing required course work and graduate seminars including the Protocol defense.
