Introduction

The programme is designed to train specialists to manage educational system at all levels. It prepares specialists in educational planning and administration. The document defines the benchmarks and minimum academic standard for Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) degree programme in Educational Management. It requires philosophy, aims and objectives, learning outcomes, admission requirement, area of specialisation, duration of programme, requirements for graduation, academic staff, staffing on core and elective courses. The BMAS are designed to develop capacity building in areas of ICT, entrepreneurship/studies in response to current realities, global competitiveness and relevance: it is to enable graduates become competences in research and development and make graduates to demonstrate problem solving capacity through critical innovative and creative thinking.

C.   Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is the development of professional education managers who will be involved in social engineering of the education sector either as teachers, managers of human and material resources in educational institutions as well as educational researches of repute.

D.  Aim and Objectives

The main aim of the programme is to train the necessary high level manpower required in educational management for the national development.

Objectives:

  1. developing professional expertise of students;
  2. developing knowledgeable scholars who will provide leadership in professional practicing and intellectual competence in educational development;
  3. developing competent researchers in educational management theory and practice for the greater benefit of the Nigerian education system;
  4. preparing education scholars who would teach and provide leadership at different levels of higher education;
  5. producing scholars who would compete with similar scholars from any part of the world and carry out advanced research;
  6. providing assistance for capacity building for graduates involved in teaching, planning and administration of education at various levels.

E.   Admission Requirements

The Criteria for admission into Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) programme in Educational Management shall be as follows:

  1. ‗O‘ Level Credits or equivalent in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. All candidates that have a Master degree below CGPA 60% or less than 4.0 in any relevant area of specialisation in Education.
  3. In all cases, candidates may be expected to undergo a selection process involving tests and or interviews.

F.  Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 12 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.
  2. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

EMA 864    M.Phil Graduate Seminar     2 Credits

Students are supposed to identify suitable topics in their area of specialisation and present two seminar papers at the departmental seminar, which will be assessed at the end of the oral presentation. 30h (T); C

EMA 899   Thesis   5 Credits

Candidates are required to demonstrate research competencies by selecting a thesis topic in their relevant areas of specialisation. Research is carried out by the individual student under the guidance of a competent supervisor according to graduate school requirements. 30h (T); C

  • Graduation Requirements

To qualify for the award of Master of Philosophy degree in Educational Management, a candidate must pass a minimum of 15 Credits and maximum of 20 Credits including all core and electives courses.

A candidate must have fulfilled the following conditions to be converted to a Ph.D. degree in Educational Management.

  1. Pass a minimum of 15 Credits, including all the Courses as follows: 2 Core courses of 2 Credits each

A minimum of 3 courses of 2 Credits each in the areas of specialisation

  1. To proceed to Ph.D., a candidate must pass a minimum of 60% in each of the seminars (Protocol Defence and Conversion Seminar).
