B. Introduction

The programme was introduced in the Department to meet the needed manpower in the areas of their specialisation. This programme is aimed at producing human resources in the society vis-a-vis for further enhancement of human intellectuality. Subsequently, the programme has helped some of the students who desire to do their Ph.D. in the field of Comparative Religious Studies.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to adequately aid the intellectual capacity of students in Comparative Religious Studies towards preparing them with effective capacity to foster better understanding and analysis of Religions sensitivities in Nigeria and beyond.

D Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to ensure that candidate(s) demonstrate research competence and as well develop sound intellectual engagements in the field of Comparative Religious Studies.

Objectives:

  1. enabling students to have adequate knowledge of history and Science of religions;
  2. preparing candidates with the global trend of the interplay of science and religion in the African context;
  3. producing candidates that will compete with their contemporaries in the global academic circle; and

iii. preparing the students for Ph.D. programme in Comparative Religious Studies.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. Five Credit passes in SSC/GCEO/Level subjects or its equivalent including English Language and Christian Religious Knowledge or Islamic Studies.
  2. Diploma in Theology/Religious Studies/NCE + O/Level subjects including English Language.
  3. Relevant Bachelor degree not lower than Second Class (Lower Division) from recognised universities in humanities and law.
  4. The candidate must have between 60% overall in M.A. Christian Studies. The candidate must have between 3.5 CGGPA or 60% overall in M.A. Comparative Religious Studies.
  5. The candidate must have M.Phil in Comparative Religious Studies if below 3.5 CGPA of 60%.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 6 calendar months and a maximum of 12 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 12 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months

G. Detailed Course Description

RCR 881   M.Phil. Protocol 6 Credits

M.Phil. candidates and those who are registered for M.Phil./Ph.D. programme will prepare a protocol for their dissertation. Protocol which will be on a topic in comparative religious studies: normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to a budget and plan of implementation, the protocol shall be assessed for possible upgrading to Ph.D. or to be completed as M.Phil. dissertation. 270h (P); C

RCR 897   Dissertation `12 Credits

Original dissertation in the area of comparative   religious studies shall be written by the M.Phil. candidates. Topic shall be approved by the postgraduate school on the recommendation of the department through the faculty. Dissertation must make original contributions in the area of specialisation to Knowledge. 540h (P); C

H. Graduation Requirements

  • Every M.Phil. Candidate is required to present one protocol and seminar paper in his area of specialisation;

  • Candidate must score not less than 60% in each of the presentations before conversion to Ph.D. programme.
