B. Introduction

The programme was introduced in the Department to meet the needed specialized power in that area of specialisation. Subsequently, the programme has helped some of the students who desire to do their Ph.D. in Christian Studies.

C. Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is to aid the intellectual capacity of students in Christian Studies towards preparing them with effective capacity to foster better understanding and analysis of Religious sensitivities in Nigeria and beyond.

D. Aim and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to ensure that candidate(s) demonstrate research competence and as well develop sound intellectual engagements in the field of Christian Studies.

Objectives:

  1. enabling candidate demonstrate research capabilities and develop sound intellectual;
  2. enabling students to be grounded in the knowledge of Biblical history and criticism;
  3. acquainting candidates with the global trend of biblical and theological studies, with emphasis on African perspectives;producing candidates that will compete favorably with their contemporaries in the global academic community; and
  4. preparing the students for Ph.D. programme in Christian Studies.

E. Admission Requirements

  1. Five Credit passes in SSC/GCE or its equivalent O/Level subjects including English Language and Christian Religious Knowledge.
  2. Diploma in Theology/Religious Studies/NCE + O/Level subjects including English Language.
  3. Relevant Bachelor degree not lower than Second Class Lower Division from recognised universities.
  4. The candidate must have between 55%-59.99% overall in M.A. Christian Studies.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 6 calendar months and a maximum of 12 calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 12 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months

G. Detailed Course Description

RCS 881    M.Phil. Protocol 6 Credits

M.Phil. candidates and those who registered for M.Phil./Ph.D. programme will prepare a protocol for their dissertation. Protocol which will be on a topic in Christian studies: normal aspects of a research proposal in addition to budget and plan of implementation. Protocol shall be assessed for possible upgrading to Ph.D. or to be completed as M.Phil. dissertation. 270h (P); C

RCS 897    Dissertation 12 Credit

Original dissertation in the area of Christian studies shall be written by M.Phil. candidates. Topic shall be approved by the postgraduate school on the  recommendation   of   the department through the faculty. Dissertation must make original contributions in the area of specialisation to knowledge. 540h (P); C

H. Graduation Requirements

  • Every M.Phil. candidate is required to present one protocol and seminar paper in his area of specialisation;

  • Candidate must score not less than 60% in each of the presentations before conversion to Ph.D. programme.
