B.  Introduction

The Master of philosophy (M.Phil) in Arabic Language Education is designed for degree holders who have 55% to 59% or its equivalent in their Master of Education (M.Ed) Programme. The M.Phil. in Arabic Language Education is a combined programme of taught modules and research, which allows students to gain valuable knowledge in education while investigating their own interests.

C.  Philosophy

The philosophy of the M.Phil programme in Arabic Language Education is to educate at an advanced level, teachers in Arabic Language to have higher skills to teach, research and practise at various levels of education.

D.  Aim and Objectives

The aim of M. Phil programme in Arabic Language Education is to provide opportunities for individuals wanting to pursue a Ph.D degree in Arabic Language Education but scored less than 60% or its equivalent in their Master of Education (M.Ed) degree programme. The objectives of M.Phil programme in Arabic Language Education are to:

  1. develop professional expertise of students;
  2. develop knowledgeable scholars who will provide leadership in professional practice and intellectual competence in education;
  3. produce educators who are knowledgeable in and committed to the implementation of National Policy on Education;
  4. develop competent researchers in educational theory and practice for the Nigeria education system;
  5. empower educators who can propel social change through education both intellectually, in attitudes, skills, values and worldviews.

E.  Admission Requirements

Candidates are required to have the following:

  1. ‗O‘ Level credits or its equivalent in five (5) subjects including English  language and Mathematics.
  2. a first degree honours in Education with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.
  3. a first degree honours in any other disciplines with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognized University obtained at Credit Level.
  4. Scores of 55% to 59% or equivalents in the Master degree programme in Education from university of Ilorin or equivalent degrees as approved by the Senate.

F. Duration of the Programme

  1. The duration of the programme is between 12 calendar months to 18 calendar months and 24 months to 36 months for part-time programme with an extension of not more than 6 months.
  2. Students shall present and defend a dissertation proposal (protocol) not later than 3 months after the first registration of title of not more than 300 words in the department
  3. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

RME901    Advanced Research Methods in Education 3 Credits

Concept and nature of research, scientific processes in research, problem definition, variable identification, sources of research topics, theory construction and hypotheses formulation, formulation, techniques for literature review, principles of design, instruction, data collection, techniques for data analysis and presentation of results. 45h (T); C


RME 902     Advanced Educational Statistics    3 Credits

Concept of educational statistics. Role of statistics in education, descriptive statistics and the various areas of application in education, classroom data, school records, school demography, social relations in school, school administration and finances. Inferential statistics, population and sampling theory, non-parametric statistics in education, hypothesis assumptions, types, applications and limitations. 45h (T); C

EDT 903   Information and Communication Technology   3 Credits

In-depth knowledge of skills and techniques of data processing in education. Overview of sources, storage, retrieval and dissemination of data/information. Programme design and management of data. Management of data bank. General problem solving with the use information technology and hands-on experience. 45h (T); C

AED 999     Thesis      10 Credits

Candidates are required to demonstrate research competencies by selecting a topic in their relevant areas of specialization. Research is carried out by individual student under the guidance of a competent supervisor according to postgraduate school requirements. Candidate is expected to make some significant contributions to knowledge. The thesis is defended before an appropriately constituted examining committee chaired by the Head of Department. External examiner‘s verdict shall override all other decisions. 450h (P); C

AED 904      Thesis Proposal Seminar I   3 Credits

Readings, assignments, discussion and presentation of reports on selected topics by each student in one chosen area of specialization as approved by the Department. Course shall be examined by means of a term paper. Stage I 135h (P); C

AED 905   Thesis Proposal Seminar II     3 Credits

Readings, assignments, discussion and presentation of reports on selected topics by each student in one chosen area of specialization as approved by the Department. Course shall be examined by means of a term paper. Stage II 135 h (P); C

AED 906     Conceptual Research Model Building in Educational Research 2 Credits

Course involves conceptual framework in educational research emphasizing conceptualization of the research work. 30h (T); C


  • Graduation Requirements

The condition for the award of M.Phil/Ph.D. degree in the Department of Arts Education shall include;

  1. Candidate may be required to take and pass a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 17 credits taken from an approved relevant combination of Master of Education courses and the prescribed M.Phil/Ph.D. courses which include seminar and research protocol.
  2. Candidates shall prepare and defend a research topic (protocol) subject to approval by an academic panel which consist the Head of the Department, candidate‘s supervisor and other relevant lecturers. The protocol shall be presented within the first three months of candidate‘s first registration.
  3. Candidates shall prepare and present a seminar on a research proposal approved by the academic panel on a topic which shall embody his original dissertation.
  4. A minimum of 60% cumulative Average score must be achieved before a candidate shall be permitted to proceed with the Ph.D. degree in the Department
