  • Introduction

The programme shall be offered by the Department of Health Promotion and Environmental health education and shall lead to the award of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Health Education. This programme is designed to provide further training to enable candidate contribute more effectively in topical issues of Health Education. The programme is mainly designed for holders of Master of Education degree in Health Education, Physical and Health Education or related disciplines. A student at the successful completion of the programme shall be awarded M.Phil. degree in Health Education.

C.   Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme with regards to areas of concentration and subsequent career objectives called for the development of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Health Education. It is expected that this would provide the needed intellectual commitment to the global field as well as provide the desired specialization and concentration in health education.

D.   Aim and Objectives

The programme has the following aims and objectives:

  1. promotion of desirable health practice among school children and in all levels of education through their teachers;
  2. producing teachers who have the competence to handle and coordinate all activities of the health programmes;
  3. producing teachers who have the competence to handle and cater for the health needs of the disabled;producing individuals with advanced knowledge and skills in health promotion and environmental education; and
  4. producing high level manpower with appropriate skills in health intervention and advocacy in tackling mirage of communicable and non-communicable diseases that affect man.

E.  Admission Requirements

  1. A candidate seeking admission in to M.Phil. programme in Health Education must possess the followings:
  2. ‗O‘ Level Credits or equivalent in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
  3. First degree in Health Education, Physical and Health Education or related disciplines with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division).
  4. Score at least 50 to 54.99% score in M.Ed. degree in Health Education, Physical and Health Education or related disciplines.
  5. Candidate with master degree in other related disciplines apart from Health Education or Physical and Health Education with the score of 50% or above will be eligible for admission
  6. Appear for oral interview with a panel consisting of all postgraduate lecturers in the Department.

F.  Duration of the Programme

Students admitted for M.Phil. shall be required to present a seminar to the Department. The candidate shall also present the dissertation to the Department for processed to the Postgraduate School within 24 months or less of his/her programme.

REM 881      Advanced Research Methods in Education     3 Credits

In-depth study of various methods of research. Survey studies. Developmental studies. Comparative studies. Experimental studies and correlative studies. 45h (T); C

REM 882        Advanced Statistical Methods in Education     3 Credits

Measurement of relationship. Types. Uses of partial and multiple correlational analysis. Test of significance f-test. Analysis of variance. Regression analysis. Causal model and multi-dimential measurement.

REM 883     Computer Literacy and Appreciation      3 Credits

Introduction course of general interests to the health education scientist. Treating the actual and potential role of the computer is required as a basis. Fundamentals of information systems. Design principles. Inputs: storage and maintenance. Output and vocabulary control. Monitoring and management and performance evaluation need to be taught. Consideration is to be given topics of a particular current interest in both the research and application of computer science. Application of computer analysis of research study. 45h (T); E

REM 884    Educational Measurements and Test Construction  3 Credits

Measurement: scale and scaling models. Theory of measurement error. Test construction procedures: item writing, analysis and assembly in achievement. Aptitude and non-cognitive tests. Reliability and validity of tests. Practical work in test construction. 30h (T); 45h (P); C

HED 885   Nutrition and Learning     2 Credits

Critical analysis of the relationship between nutrition and students learning ability. Value ansd provision of school lunch, nutritional care of children at home and school. 30h (T); E

HED 886 Trends Pollution and Pollution Control in Nigeria      2 credits

Survey of major environmental factors with impact on human health: air, water, noise and radiation pollution hazards. Influences of human intermingling and city congestions on pollution must be touched especially in urban towns of Nigeria. Control measures are to be discussed. 30h (T); E

HED 887     Research Design and Analysis in Health Education       1 Credit

Study of various experimental research designs. Analysis of co-variance. Mixed and random models. Critical review and evaluation of selected studies in health education locating, formulating and solving problems. Indepth exposure to various types and methods of research. 15h (T); E

HED 888    Statistics in Health Education      2 Credits

Course in basic statistics with application to the field of health education and the social researches. Emphasis is placed on descriptive and inferential statistics. 30h (T); E

HED 813    Current Progress in Tropical Diseases Control      2 Credits

Interpretation of current findings and how they affect prevention and control measures. Some of the current activities in the control. Prevention and management of tropical diseases will be discussed. Case studies on health problems of school children will be discussed and analysed. 30h (T); E

HED 815    Dissertation     5 Credits

Student is required to present a dissertation to the department and processed to the postgraduate school within twelve months of his/her programme. Selection of a dissertation title shall be under the guidance of a supervisor. 225h (P); C

Graduation Requirements

The programme consists of Course work, Seminars and dissertation presentation on a topic approved by the supervisor. Candidate must have taken and passed both the core and the selected elective courses with a score of not less than 50%. Candidate must also to have presented and defended his/her research dissertation to the satisfaction of a panel of internal examiners. To be awarded Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Health Education, a candidate must have fulfilled the following conditions.
