B.   Introduction

The Master degree program in Sociology of Education gives students a strong disciplinary grounding that allows them to approach education questions with a sociological lens. Students choose an area of concentration when they enter the program:

  • Education Policy, or
    • Social and Cultural Studies of Education

Sociology of Education students take common core courses in qualitative and quantitative sociological research methods, sociological theory, and the sociology of education. Faculty research and core courses primarily focus on Nigerian education. The program consists of a total of 40 credits, which full-time students generally complete in three semesters plus a summer or four semesters.

C.   Philosophy

The program focuses on understanding the various issues and problems confronting contemporary society. It covers the social foundations and processes of organizations and social systems such as communities and other collectivities. It seeks to equip Master students with basic and advanced knowledge, values and skills that they can use to enable their educational institutions to effectively respond to the challenges education in today‘s society.

D.   Aims and Objectives

The master‘s program in Sociology of Education is designed to provide students with strong analytical and methodological training in a sociological approach to education-related questions and problems. The program prepares students to pursue careers in research evaluation, education policy, government agencies, and youth and community service organizations. Specifically, Master‘s degree in Sociology of education is designed to equip the students to be able to:

  1. impart a thorough understanding of research methods;
  2. provide students with the opportunity to undertake original research and scholarship in sociology of education , both independently and in collaboration with their lecturers for publications and presentations;
  3. equip students with the basic knowledge, values and skills that they can use to enable their institution to effectively respond to the challenges of education in today‘s society;
  4. demonstrate the ability to think sociologically and to apply sociological principles and research methods;
  5. analyze educational problems and issues by using concepts in and knowledge and research methods of Sociology

E.  Admission Requirements

Candidates for the Master‘s Degree in Sociology of Education must have the following:

  1. ―O‖ Level credits or equivalent in five subjects including English and Mathematics;
  2. A first degree honours in Education with a minimum of second class lower division;
  3. A first degree honours in other disciplines with a minimum of second class lower division plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognized University obtained at credit level;
  4. Qualifying examination for all except candidates with second class upper and first class from University of Ilorin;
  5. In all cases, candidates may be expected to undergo a selection process involving tests and/or interviews;
  6. Evidence that they meet the matriculation requirements of the University of Ilorin; and
  7. Evidence of NYSC discharge certificate or exemption/exclusion certificate is required.

F. Duration of Programme

  1. The Full-time Masters degree in Sociology of education shall run for a minimum of 18 Calendar months and a maximum of 24 Calendar months.
  2. The Part-time programme shall run for a minimum of 24 Calendar month and a maximum of 36 Calendar months.
  3. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

HPE 801   Foundations of Nigerian Education  2 Credits

A survey of the traditional, historical, political and social foundations of Nigerian Education. Critical assessment of the contribution of the various educational traditions and agencies of educational development in colonial and independent Nigeria. 30h (T);

RME 801   Research Methods in Education   3 Credits

Types of research, method and data. Types of instruments. Types of procedures for data collection. Methods of data analysis. Application of computer in data analysis. Presentation of results and conclusions. 45h (T);C

RME 803  Statistical Methods in Educational Research  2 Credits

Review of Basic Statistical Concepts; descriptive, parametric. Inferential and non- parametric statistics; t-statistic, ANOVA, ANCOVA, Regression Analysis, Chi- square and Statistical techniques for post-hot analysis. Application of computer in statistical analysis. Meaning and results of statistical analysis. 30h (T);C

RME 805    Educational Measurement and Test Construction  3 Credits

Measurement, scale and scaling models. Theory of measurement error. Test construction procedures; item writing, analysis and assembly in achievement, aptitude and non-cognitive tests. Reliability and validity of tests. Practical work in test construction. 45h (T);E

SOE 801   Sociology of the School   2 Credits

The classroom as a social system. Social interaction and learning of norms, roles. Roles and Responsibilities of school personnel. Roles of a Teacher in the school and classroom and factors that influences a teacher‘s role performance. Concepts of Hidden Curriculum of the school building, classroom sitting arrangement, timetable, textbook, and classroom language of instruction. 30h (T);C

Concept of Sociological Theory: Functionalism, conflicts, symbolic interaction, labeling, exchange). Various Sociological Theories (Identification of Theorists, Conditions for propounding the theories, Explanation of the theories). Application of sociological theories to education. SOE 803   Education and Social Development   2  Credits

A study of the relationship between education and social, economic and political development. The impact of social change on education and education as a factor in social change. Global perspective on education and social development. Comparative analysis of aims of education in other countries (developed and developing). Education, Certification and Development (Deschooling Society, Banking concept of education as an instrument of oppressor). Relevance and reality of structural factors in social development. 30h (T);E

SOE 804    Sociology of Childhood and Adolescence   2 Credits

Socialization process, educational implications of social class influences on childhood and adolescence. Sociological concept of childhood and adolescence. Influence of Socializing Agents on child development. Family as a social institution and child development, family types and educational development of the child. 30h (T);C

SOE 805  Educational Opportunity and Social Stratification 3 Credits

An examination of inequality of educational opportunity in relation to status, power, mobility and social differentiation. Student‘s educational and occupational aspirations. Influence of social stratification and on students behaviour. Educational life chances of who gets what: labeling theory and life chances, gender, social class, special needs education). SOE 806   Group Dynamics in Education   2 Credits

A survey of major research works on small groups and interpersonal relationships. Concept, principles and types of group dynamics. Robert K. Merton‘s contribution to group dynamics. Application of group dynamics to classroom situations. Classroom as a social group. Relevance of group dynamics to teaching-learning process. Sociological perspectives on group formation. 30h (T);E

SOE 807   Current Social Problems 2 Credits

A survey of current social problems in Nigeria, e.g. changing sex roles and values, population explosion, materialism and indiscipline; their effects in schools. 30h (T);E

SOE 808    Graduate Seminar in Sociology of Education 2Credits

Study and discussion of selected topics; preparation and presentation of individual (or group reports) in the approaches area of specialization in Social Studies Education. The course shall be examined by means of a term paper(s). 30h (P);C

SOE 839  Research Dissertation    6 Credits Selection and completion of a dissertation in an appropriate area of specialization in Sociology of Education under the guidance of a supervisor and presentation of the project report. 90h (T); C
